Thread pitch

How can you tell what pitch a thread is 1/1.25? What is most commonly used on bike fairings?

I've never seen a fairing bolt that wasn't standard pitch.

So that's M5 x 0.8 or M6 x 1.0

Not sure there is a choice between metric coarse or fine for small bolts like those used on fairings.

It is 12mm on the head 6mm on the shaft and 19mm long, it is m6 x 1.0? I'm guessing yes?

I'm not sure, it holds on the Missle launchers I'm replacing them because the heads are slighly Orangy with rust and stand out as there is not a spot of rust anywhere else on the bike. Am I right in thinking ally shouldn't rust? They are also Torx heads which are a pain.

Take a set of calipers and measure from peak to peak on two adjacent threads and you'll be measuring the pitch.

No they are too short and are Silver they need to be Black or they will not look right. Also the head looks too big.

You need a thread pitch guage they are only a few £, No more guessing.

hi,
i thought you said they were M6 x 1.00, the ones i linked to are 10mm long. (1cm)
they also do other lengths though.......
& they are standard button heads.
i thought you had a problem with rust, you wouldnt have that problem with s/s.
im guessing the cases which they bolt into are black then.?
guess you will have to get anodised black then?
as black carbon steel will rust also.....
definately get a thread pitch guage, i got one in a cheap tap & die set i bought years ago & has been invaluable.

Fine pitch threads are stronger and you get more clamping force for the tightening torque. Also, because the minor diameter of the thread is larger on a fine thread the bolt is less likely to snap.

I'm not sure I can agree with that. I've tried and I can't think of a time when I last had a seized fine thread bolt on a bike. Of course, they tend to be used in areas not commonly associated with seizing like exhaust studs etc. I see no reason why a fine thread bolt should be more prone to seizing, other than the fact that they are usually a better class of fit.

Fine thread bolts on a bike tend to be used where larger clamping forces and resistance to vibrating loose are required. Engine mounts (screwed into the alloy), caliper mounts, camshaft sprockets, tappets,spark plugs etc.
