Looking to get an AA-style break down policy that covers me if I'm in other vehicles, preferably as a passenger or rider/driver.
Want it to take me home (or to where I'm going) rather than just the nearest garage.
Definitely need it to cover recovery after an at-fault accident.
I don't have fully comp, so don't want something designed to recover the costs from that.

Recommendations?
Obviously I'd also like a fast service that knows about and handles bikes okay, oh, and a winning lottery tickey while you're at it Razz.

The AA were good when I had a fuel Problem
(ask dusty)
They had a good bike knowledge (although that might have been luck) and The AA man assessed it as my fault. They still recovered the bike home for me and asked no questions.
You may have answered you're own problem! They can cover the member not the vehicle although I've no experience of this cos I got my membership free with my SV650.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Hi

The AA charge you for recovering a vehicle after an accident, or claim off your insurance.

The RAC are totally useless at the moment. 4 hour wait last year, and they forgot that I rang them! I am not the only person I know who had their call forgotted by the RAC.

We landed up going with Direct Line, although they don't seem to advertise that they cover bikes.

All the best

Keith

The AA's basic option at £40 only takes you to a garage if theres an approved one nearby, not home, you need the £90 option for that.

I went with International Breakdown which do all the things you need, take you to home or destination and cover you as rider or passenger on any vehicle for £66

Question - do you get (effectively) unlimted numbers of "free" call outs? I've always been under the impression that you only get the first service free, and any subsiquent calls will cost...?

My AA cover is the middle one - get me home or where I'm going - and cos I bought online they threw in a free home start.

The main reason I went AA was that they cover me, so it's good for the bike, car or anything I'm a passenger in too.

They might charge for picking you up if your bike's in several pieces after a biggie, but I haven't heard of them charging for your own minor mishaps... I think as long as the bike will roll, it's basically cool.

I believe I get 4 call outs for my year's money, after that there may be a charge. And if I don't use it, my renewal fee drops.

The only thing to remember with the AA is to explain a bit about your bike when you ring, cos it can be the difference between them sending the van with the fold-up bike trailer (which is very cool and I want one!) or the van with the lift thing at the back. Apparently the lift thing can have problems with lower fairings on sportsbikes getting scratched (so the AA guy at Stockley was telling us when he came to collect a Blade) so if you can't take the lowers off (which is what Blade boy did), you might want to make sure you get the other van.

The RAC were Ok for me at times. I did have a few very cold, very long waits though. I've got cover with my insurance now.

You might have got away with it but their terms and conditions do state they will charge. I confirmed this when we were looking to move from the totally useless RAC. Decided that if someone knocked the bike over breaking the brake lever (say £10 worth of damage) I was not going to claim off my insurance, loose my no claims bonus and make myself virtually uninsurable the following year.

Think the RAC allow 6 call outs in a year before they up the renewal fee. However at the moment given their response times you would probably have difficulty having sufficient time to call them out six times in a year.

All the best

The RAC, in my experience, are diabolical.

I'd done 150 miles on my brand new NSR when it broke down on the way to work. I had to push the thing nearly a mile to work and nearly gave meself a connery (sic). I left the bike out front and rang the RAC (obviously I didn't tell 'em I worked there! Me not daft!)

The time was 9:10am. They said they were on their way but there was an hour wait. Now bare in mind, as far as they're concerned, I'm stranded. They didn't know I had an office to sit in.

An hour came and went - nothing. I rang them at 10:30, and again at 11:30, and a third time at 12:30.

And again at 1PM.

After reaching the end of my patience with listening to "he'll be there soon", my mobile rang. "Hello, you've broken down? I can't find you!". I very calmly and politely directed the guy to where I was - I knew where HE was because he said he could see a pub which was about half a mile away.

20 minutes later..... nothing.

The phone rings again; "It's me again - I can't find where you are". I ended up having to walk about a quarter of a mile to find him and his truck.

He finally got to where my bike was at 1:35PM - four and a half hours after I first reported the breakdown. He told me the breakdown had only been reported to them 45 minutes ago. So what were the RAC doing for the last three hours?!!

As if the four hour delay wasn't bad enough, he then proceeded load the bike onto his truck after making no attempt to repair it, to take it back to where I'd bought it from a week earlier. Not only that, but he did nothing but whinge about how he hated NSRs and their plastic faring.

And I'm like, "Just do your job, dammit! I don't pay you for fucking criticism!"

The final "fairy on top of the xmas tree" came when Carnell Bikes said I'd have to PAY to have it repaired! They said a ballvalve was stuck open and flooded the carb and implied that "You've got some dirt in the fuel system".

After I went through my repertoire of swear words and recited an 'extended highlights' of my day so far, topped off with a closing statement of "If you aren't gonna fix it for free you can keep it and I'll have my money back", they fixed it for free.

Was that the end of it? Oh no. Smile

In my anger, frustration and haste, I'd left my helmet at work! Took me 45 minutes to walk back. Very Happy

International Breakdown provide unlimited callouts, though I'd assume they'll start getting pissed off if it's frequent, check their site for details.

Yes, but you know how modern companies change their names on a regular basis to hide their previous mistakes.

All the best
