Just been offered a yzf600 thundercat which would be ideal as a trackday tool but the guy has no documentation with it, there is no reg plate with the bike and although the other stuff on the bike all ads up i don't want to buy a stolen bike or a ringer, number on the headstock is unmolested and the vin plate is present, dvla are as unhelpful as ever!

How about a HPI check.

Just type VIN check into google for masses of companies who will do it.

What you need is a Vehicle Identity Check, which is a VOSA rather than DVLA thing.

The downside is that it's a physical inspection and costs ~£50.

Try contacting VOSA on 0300 123 9000, they can tell you if there's a VIC marker set and, apparently, help you obtain numberplates.

Never tried it, however, and if you don't want to get it back on the road it might not be worth the hassle.

Why can the current owner not apply for a v5 or for replacement plates? I can see that it could be a hassle, but if the bike's alright and it isn't stolen, it would seem like a small thing to do for a bike that's still worth ~£1200.

haven't asked him that because he claims to have bought it from a mate of a mate who left it in the garage for over a year and doesn't know the reg number, sounds dodgy but also it's possibly perfectly plausible!

Apparently, the less-than-ideal solution is to get a copper to do a PNC check on the VIN, which should allow you to get the reg, ect.

Allegedly some forces offer this as paid service, but I can't track down details.

You could always stand in a field with the bike, looking slightly suspicious until a copper turns up and they're forced to do the check! (you can reduce the waiting time by dobbing yourself in- 'hello? there's some hooligan ragging a motorbike around a field!')

Either way you will need to do some kind of check.
EIther you ask the seller to do it or you do it yourself.
Insurance companies will tell you to fek off if you do not have a Reg. No.
I guess DVLA may be able to help but you will have to call them.

Or walk away.
Unless it is dead dead cheap.

Only trouble with buying it dead dead cheap is this:

If it IS stolen and the cops catch you with it, if you didn't pay what the bike would reasonably expect to be worth, you get done for handling stolen goods.

if i can't find out whether or not it is stolen i'll just leave it alone, i'm not desperate enough to save a few quid to compromise myself and my family-gut feeling is that it's all ok but that's not really enough for me!
