I did a search and opinion seems divided...

A range of chain tools being advised and a HOW TO came up on how to rivet the new chain with a hammer...

There are loads of different chain tools around, which ones do you guys own - I don't intend on doing this too often but I would like it to last a few years yet. Ideal would be one like below for under £50.

Or should I just crack out the hammer?

I have this one

Whale chain tools seem to come recommended on here. I had a cheaper Motrax one that snapped on the third use. I think I've only used the Whale tool once so far but it made the job so simple. Hopefully, coming from Whale it will last.

I have a Heine Gericke own make one.

I'll have used it half a dozen times now with no problems.

For hollow rivets - an ok cheapish tool and an angle grinder to remove.
For solid rivets - a whale tool to do both.

I have been known to reuse links that I've split with the whale, but it's a load of hassle and generally probably not worth it.

Thumbs Up

You need to grind the end off the rivet when splitting or it will break and you will have to go back to the shop and get a new one. Smile

Used it 3 times since then. No probs at all.

But if you grind the end off, you don't really need a splitter Confused - a quick hammer on a small punch or similar does the job.

The chain I am buying says it comes with a soft rivet link... would this be ok with a cheap shitty chain tool like the one in the 2nd link?

Hi

Yep. I have one of those chain rivetters as well and it will cope with soft links.

All the best

I split all those chains at a random link using that tool. Pushed the pins through with no real effort.

Cheers everyone, I bought the one that I just posted in the second link as it is a good price made better by sharing the delivery with a set of tyres and a chain and sprocket kit - for £20 if it only lasts 2 chains then it has paid for itself Thumbs Up
