I have my bike booked in soon for an M.O.T.

I recently fitted a larger rear sprocket and the plastic chain guard no longer fits so I modified it by using some thin aluminuim to raise it about 1 inch but it might look like a bodge to the tester.
So I was thinking of taking it off for the M.O.T.

Is it a fail to have no chain guard fitted?

The mod is on the rear bolt hole.

My GasGas has no chain guard and passed OK.

I seem to remember that if a bike has pillion pegs then it needs a chain guard. Worth double checking that though.

I have no chain guard and pillion pegs and no rear set for pillion. I shove carboard and ductaped it on for a rear seat for MOT pass and never had them mention a chain guard at all.

Hmm, interesting thanks.
Maybe my little aluminuim bracket is not such a big deal after all so will leave the chain guard on.

What about headleight aim, I had to take the cowling off and moved the direction screws to fit my motrax convertor.

What is the correct way to check the headlight aim at home?

it doesn't need a chainguard for mot

the mot inspector that did mine told me to take mine off as it was catching the chain, & he passed it after I removed it

your dipped head light mustn't dazzel some one 3ft tall 25ft away

& mustn't dip to the right

if you have a wall handy, put a mark 3ft up it then move your bike 25ft away from it, as long as your low beam falls on or below that mark & doesn't dip to the right you should be fine

it's supposed to be where the average drivers eyes would be when sat in a car

but the regulations i was reading at the time stated a person of 3ft tall as a bench mark

Thanks for the info regarding lights. I will check that out on the garage door 25 feet back.

Regarding the chain guard I found this site earlier.
In the "Final Drive" section.

In the exhaust section it says a silencer must have BSAU 193 stamped on it, mine has not but 2 people at wemoto (Ichecked before I bought) told me it is road legal, that's why I bought it.
Mine has got e9 stamped on it. Will it fail on that?

don't worry about the exhaust,

the E9 stamp is the european version of the british standards mark

I've never seen an MOT inspector look for them yet,

they just listen to it & if they think it's not too loud then you're fine

the standard exhaust on my armstrong dosen't have any markings on it & that always passed ok

I couldn't see any section on final drive on that link you posted but it made my computer play up something awfull

The silencer is nice and quiet so should be ok then.

That site keeps clicking, really annoying.

Final drive is not in the red section.
Instead scroll down near the bottom of the page, it is below "exhuast system".

I don't know where mr rip got the 3' foot height 25' foot back from.

If you watch this video he states the height on the wall should be the height to the centre of your headlight and only go back 12' foot 6" (3.81m).

Apparently this is very important and the most common reason for a failed M.O.T.
