They rust like f**k, this is what it looked like after 1 winter, under a bike cover for the whole time, not driven throughout winter. Only buy one if you own a garage and happen to have about 50 bottles of polish lying about...

old and new pads:

forks:

there is a lot more rust/ general crud, but i couldn't be bothered to picture it all.

This is what mine looks like since daily commuting duties, from 1st October, with only sparing cleans every month or two. Can't say I've had similar problems.

Tbh, that's as much the fault of the way it was stored as it was the bike. Clean it and coat it before you cover it for any real amount of time, the fairing brackets on a mates triumph wound up looking worse in the space of a couple of weeks because he made the same mistake Sad

it may be an issue that's been sorted out with newer bikes, or it may be your bike has only seen 1 winter...
Do you have any problems with your bike? Mine is a bit of a bastard to start sometimes but i think that's because its a big twin, electrics and general build quality isn't a big issue, but its no where near as good as jap bikes...

either way, it isn't a myth that the build quality is less than desirable for older Ducati's. Looks like the new ones are doing better though.

i left my 00 r6 outside all winter not covered up, and there was some very minor surface rust, that is hardly even worth mentioning... that is in a lot better condition, and its older than the ducati. Also triumph's are known to be just as bad as ducati's when it comes to rusting away Wink

Would suggest that part of the problem is that you have covered the Ducati. Provides a nice warm cocoon to trap any condensation, getting water to where it would otherwise not sit and preventing rain from washing away salt, etc.

All the best

Depends on the cover used - the more expensive ones tend to be breathable to stop the problems you describe. (i.e. the old tarpaulin syndrome)

What Ducati is this and how old is it?

Question

Still stops rain washing salt away from many areas.

All the best

[Touches wood] I haven't had any problems with mine since I got it. Electrics, finish, starting etc have all been perfect. The only problem is the quite frankly sh*te mirrors, but I tend to ride faster to alleviate that problem... Laughing Cool

The only crappy areas on mine seem to be the engine paint and foot peg hangers which also has flaky paint, it's never covered but garaged. Mines an 04 bike as well Thumbs Up

Its not exactly Ducati's fault. Store any steel based item in a humid atmosphere and its going to rust itself to dust in no time. A friends Japanese bike did the same thing over winter. Those covers are like cheap fart trapping tents, the condensation and moisture are going to stay full time. Im lucky but I wouldnt buy a nice bike to be left outside to corrode, especially not a dubious build quality Italian bike.

Surely this hasnt suprised you? You must have expected this to happen given the circumstances?

Also, the cheaper 'commuter' jap bikes tend to suffer more from this than their top sports bikes which cost a decent chunk more - my GSXR seems to be doing ok so far, while the SVs I've had were much worse (though I have made good use of ACF50 too in this case.)

I ride my TDM900 every day, it is left outside and rarely cleaned and it looks better than that (Well the metal parts).

My 848 was left out in the snow, buried about half way, was absolutely fine and started first time when the snow melted.

Older Ducatis were rubbish, the new ones are sorted.

The only Rust anywhere on my 4 is 6 bolts that have a tiny bit of orange on them. The rear brake banjo bolt has completely rusted on the head (No idea why the others are fine) and there is a tiny tiny amount at the top of the Exhaust behind the rad which you can't see unless you stick your head under the forks and look up.

You want to ride every day and leave the bike outside? Buy a C90.

You want to go to bike meets looking like you just finished an episode of pimp my ride and want good handling and some power, buy a Ducati.

You're effectively blaming the bike for what can only be attributed to your own neglect. Sportsbikes aren't designed as car replacements, they are designed as summer toys. If you want a commuter buy a commuter. If you want a garage queen buy a garage queen, but never the twain shall meet.

Unless you are G and have a GSXR1000 - although even G who is anti bike cleaning etc slathered his bike in ACF50 and keeps it in a garage overnight...
