I noticed my transmission oil was a bit low today. So I went out for a quick ride to check my new speedo cable is working properly and have a hunt around for 10W-30 oil. I couldn't find any in petrol stations so ended up going to a bike shop which sells a lot of 2 stroke 125s and scooters.

They didn't have any 10w-30 but the guy there said I should buy some of this Putoline "Special Scooter Gear Oil" which just says SAE 30W on the bottle. Now the bike has cooled down I was just about to top up with it but I figured I may as well get a second opinion...

It's currently got SAE 10W-30 engine oil which I put in it about a month ago (the bottle is at home in essex so I can't use it).

Thanks

Any normal 15W40 or such will be fine.

It's not getting contaminated with combustion byproducts, at least shouldnt be, and the power isn't terrifyingly high either.

Theres morrsions 3 quid a litre 15W40 in mine and all seems fine.

If your bike specifies 10w-30, buy that, not 15w-40. Rolling Eyes It specifies a certain viscosity for a reason.
https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-934-motul-transoil-10w-30-lubricant-for-gearboxes-with-wet-clutch.aspx

If you register on the site, it'll cost you £5.47 instead of £6.07. SAE30 oil will be too viscous when cold, so your clutch will be grabby / drag.

I'm not saying that a slightly different oil will cause massive problems, but if your buying some oil anyway, why buy anything other than whats specified? It all costs about the same anyway.

I filled my RXS with 10W40, I fill my TZR with 10W40 (should be 10W30), I filled my Chaly with 15W40 (should be 10W40). My dad fills his RD250 with 10W40 (should be 10W30). Never had any issues.

I've only ever used 10w40 in my RXS. Today I passed the 350,000 mile mark, and about 91,000 for the current motor, so I guess that must be OK Laughing

Either might work fine, but if it says 10w-30, what is your thinking process for buying 15w-40? Your not saving any money, and it's not as if it's hard to find 10w-30.
I'm not saying you can't use 10w-30, more so that I just don't understand why you would, when you could use the 10w-30 that is specified. Neutral

Quite a few. Some were replaced temporarily and refurbished, then put back into service. About 60% of the bike is original. I've just finished rebuilding the original motor, so that percentage will rise once that's back in. Still waiting for the current engine to cark it - it seems indestructible.

10w30 oil is pretty hard to come by. It's not something that seems in great demand.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up topping up with the oil I bought. Worst case scenario is my clutch gets a bit odd and I have do an oil change to 10w-30 or 40.

I am still in awe of 27cows' RXS. I wish I had the technical experience to be able to keep the bike reliable for 300k but I somewhat doubt it... Hopefully I'll get a more powerful bike when I pass my test so I can experiment and improve the RXS without risking my only transport.

Silkolene light gear oil is a goodun.

Incidentally it is claimed to be a good alternative to 10/30 and 10/40 so there you go.
