For anyone who has done a Europe trip before, I was wondering how much money you think we should take when we go?

Thinking

Hopefully going for 2 weeks and doing around 3000 miles in this time. We will be camping and eating what we can find on route.

Pass the popcorn

We are looking to split our money 50/50 (me and my cousin who will be riding pillion) for food and fuel, but dont know how much money to take.

Penny Coin Pound Coin Penny Coin Pound Coin Penny Coin Pound Coin Penny Coin Pound Coin Penny Coin

We may also get a hotel for a couple of nights (for a shower, etc).

Rain

We will be taking 'emergency money' for anything which might crop up unexpectedly.

Doh!

Any ideas ??? (because we have absolutely NO IDEA !!).

Brick Wall

*** When we have ask people; we have had suggestions from a couple of hundred £s to over £10,000. Shocked - hopefully is it closer to the £100s.

Cheers

Wink

£12 per 100 miles for fuel
5p-12 per mile on the French Peage.

Camping in France is dirt cheap same in Spain & portgual nefer more than 12 Euro, in Italy it was as much as 35 Euro to camp.

Hotels are 30-50Euro ~ look for Auberges, Pensions and Gites, they are cheaper than hotels also around the alps look for out of season ski hotels these are very cheap as there is nobody there.

Eat where locals eat (boulangeries) drink where the locals drink, the big cafe, hotel bar in the middle of town is designed to catch tourists, the small bars the kind Igo into are for locals and are thus cheaper but close earlier.

Castellane for example has an expensive bar in the middle, but go to the campsite turning right instead of Left to go down to Grasse you can find a campsite with a small bar and it is much cheaper.

Put it this way, my middle of the road tours cost £8-1000 camping hotels but i am heavy on beers and exceptionally heavy on the throttle as I use it like an on off switch.

The bloke I met at the end of my Spanish tour cooked everything himself camped everynight and wild camped a few times he spent 200Euro. He rode everywhere slowly too.

Probably £400 for fuel and tolls roads if your using them. Easiest to put all fuel on a credit or debit card if you have one which doesn't charge fee's (if not try and get one before you go, Nationwide Debit account or santander Zero credit card are good).

Hotel's can be quite cheap for etap or F1's in france at least. Again they can go on a card anyhow - decent hotels cost about the same as they do here.

Maybe take £300 each in euro's? There are plenty of cashpoints anyhow...I'd rather be charged a few quid by the bank than be carrying more than that around anyhow.

This might be a problem, might have gone away though in that there used to be a card problem whereby a company in france would hold a large sum of money then give it you back sometime later, meaning it does your card in after a day or two.

When my card got refused at 2 cashpoints in France (tryin to take out £150 each time), it took 7-10 days to get my money back. That was the process. Neutral

Yea it's possible - not sure never took any money out in France as was just blasting through on the way there and back. It worked fine in Austria, Italy and Switzerland though. Never had any problems using my cards in the petrol stations or hotels though - I think I was using my Nationwide Credit and Debit cards.

If your only using cash when they don't take cards though you don't need that much anyhow.

We worked on £400 fuel for 3500 miles and we each had about £400 cash. I used a credit card to pay for most things and then paid it off in full when I returned home.

I had £1000 in a savings account, a credit card with £1000 credit limit and took £350 in euros. Steve had a similar amount. We paid cash for fuel & food when we didn't have the option of using a debit/credit card, but where possible we used the cards. We spent on average what Itchy said for camping but I paid for a fairly expensive hotel at lake Bled as a birthday present for Steve (our room had a lake view) and he paid for a hotel in Italy which was very luxurious but with a slightly expensive price tag. I bought £500 worth of tobacco back and replaced a digital camera (almost £100) and my panniers (with a very large holdall for about £80)which both broke and still managed to spend less than £1500 and eat out in restaurants quite often during the 2 weeks away.

If you are both sharing fuel costs then I would reckon on about £200 for fuel, £200 food and about £10 a night camping fees each. That should prevent you from running out of money and penny pinching towards the end of your holiday, all you have to add on is any money you want to be able to spend on anything specific (like I did with tobacco).

It is going to depend a lot on you - just buy food from supermarkets, wild camp and you won't be spending much. Spend lots on expensive campsites, hotels and restaurants to push it up a lot.

I didn't have a problem just using my card, but I wasn't too worried by pennies - I had a reasonable balance and intended to enjoy myself as I saw fit - though this still meant lots of wild camping and supermarket food, however I didn't feel bad about paying for restaurant food either.

Not sure the OP makes any suggestion of going to France or Spain country.

Easiest thing to do is head east and get as far east as possible. Prague is cool, Budapest, Lake Balaton, Croatia etc.. Poland is pretty good fun too, with amazing girls.

Depending on your bike fuel will be around £360 for 3,000miles. I always find i get much better fuel economy when touring even two up with luggage my old ZXR750 could get over 220miles per tank.

As others have said camping isn't really more that €12- Not sure why you think you can't shower at a campsite. The some of the sites i've stayed at are 5* ADAC facilities - Camping Berger in Koln and the site in Stobrec string to mind. The word Hotel doesn't really seem to mean much, it could mean the 7* hotel in dubai or a shabby F1 piece of nastiness. Look for private rooms, zimmer frei and hostels.

I would budget about £800. That served me fine last year and I went to Monaco and Cannes
