Argh!

I always have a moment where I forget what gear I'm in - the bike (a YBR125) doesn't have any indicator to show gears... So how do people remember? OR.....

Is there an accessory of some kind that can be used to show me what gear I'm in?

On the CBT I always dropped into neutral, either thinking it was 1st or 2nd... Embarassed so the amount of times I start to accelerate and don't move was embarassing. I try to remember that I'm in 3rd for example, but loving the ride so much when I get to the junction I've lost it Sad

You can get a gear indicator, but I can tell by my revs and speed what gear I am in.

Something like this: https://www.bustersclassic.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=DATADIGI

You'll get used to it, my YBR was always at 6k revs at 40mph in 5th gear, you learn to know the sound and revs of each gear and just go from there, I actually find it more difficult to judge on my CBR due to having 6 gears and rarely needing them all :p

Gear indicators are not always reliable, just practice mate, that's all you need and you'll grasp it.

If you find yourself going into neutral instead of first or second, give the shifter a slightly more spirited kick to ensure it goes into the gear you want.

Aside from that, practice is all you'll need... you'll soon know what revs/engine noise you'll be at at certain speeds in certain gears. The bike I did my CBT on had a digital indicator but you couldn't trust it... it just went blank for neutral, but sometimes would also go blank for second!

You don't need to know which gear you're in. Only whether you need to go up or down.

To be fair you get used to it after a while and you know without thinking.

you cant even trust the neutral light on the ybr I've got one as a hire bike and every now and again you click into what you think is neutral and the bike agrees showing the "N" light so you let the clutch out and it stalls, its bloody frustrating Mad

you dont need to.

match the gear to the speed you are doing.

after that it comes naturally.

I had the same thing when I started riding, after a while you get used to the engine noise and it will come to you.

If something happens on the road to distract me sometimes I'll still think I'm a gear higher than I actually am, but, you'll get there in the end.

This, I looked everywhere for a gear indicator when I started. After 2 week of riding one bike you will know what gear you are in without having to remember.

Hi

Like others, most of the time I don't care what gear I am in, just whether the gear I am in gives me the umph I want. Only time I care is trying to change up from top or down from first.

If you find yourself going into neutral then possibly have a play with adjusting the position of the gear lever.

All the best

Keith

To echo the sentiments again...

You will just get used to it, you don't need to know what gear you're in at all unless you're moving off from a stop, then just go to the bottom of the box.

Match the gear to the road speed. Thumbs Up.
