Planning a service on my Triumph Trident next weekend and currently buying the parts in. Few q's though Smile

Arrow What oil is best/most recommended? Castrol Power 1 GPS or Silkolene Comp4? Happy to hear any others if you use them.

Arrow Are iridium plugs worth the extra or are they are bit of a con?

Arrow Does anyone know how to open up the airbox on a T3 Triumph? Believe it or not but Triumph actually state you need to replace the whole airbox and not replace the filter inside. I just want to get inside and clean the filter though.

Arrow Do you think it is worth checking the valve clearances while im in there. Its a 25,000 mile engine.

Cheers, Ant Thumbs Up

I tend to use Motul 5100. Not the absolute best, but not the most expensive either. More than adequate for the price, and does everything I expect it to.

Arrow Are iridium plugs worth the extra or are they are bit of a con? I've heard mixed reactions about them, but in the main, I see them as an overpriced gimmick. I've never had any problems with "standard" plugs, so I see no reason to change ATM.

...Your other two questions are bike specific, and I don't have any experience with your bike, so I'll leave that up to others to answer.

HTH Thumbs Up

Silkolene Comp4 is a "real" semi-synthetic oil, according to https://hondacg125.awardspace.com/oil.htm#Which%20Oil%20quality%20to%20use

So i'd use that if they cost the same, as i've no idea about Castrol GPS (i've used both oils previously and of course could never notice the difference on my lowly commuter bikes - i do remember them both being expensive though!)

I use Motul 5100 too - its reasonably priced and very good, i know of a few engine tuners who swear by it so its good enough for me.

Iridium plugs - they last longer, but cost more... I dont think there is any performance gain from using them (well, none that i have noticed) so its up to you really.

Valve clearance check - i think from memory on yours they need to be checked at 12k intervals, so yes, if you can do it then check them.

No idea about the airbox, sorry.

Thumbs Up

If you are going touring then I would definately do valve clearances and give the bike a proper service (check and repack bearings etc)

Are you sure your airbox can't be split and just a section changed. The blade is similar as when you change the airfilter it comes attached to a block of plastic that makes up the airbox. I have no experience with your bike though so I havent got a clue really.

Today was the day, all sorted cheers! Thumbs Up Karma

I ended up going with the Silkolene simply because a) a guy with the same bike as me said he swears by it and b) Busters has a deal on with this oil and a filter kit aswell.

Valve clearances - i was a bit anxious of doing this because i didnt know what the results were going to be but to my surprise they were all fine apart from 2.

The spec for the two out of spec inlet valves are 0.10mm but my 0.08mm feeler fitted comfortably so i am not going to worry about these for the moment.

I will check them all again at the next service anyway.

Other than that, all is well, new plugs, oil, carbs synced and she runs sweet Smile

IOM soon too Mr. Green
