Hi,

Does anyone know where you can get quotes for a restricted licence?

On all the comparison sites I've tried you can only get quotes for a Full UK licence and when you call them up they always say its the wrong licence type and then up rate the premium 200%

So, anyone know a comparison site where you can enter a restricted licence or a company that does it?

Cheers! Thumbs Up

You have a FULL UK licence. If they don't ask if it's restricted and only distinguish between Provisional and Full, you enter Full.

They have a duty to ask clear questions (insurance ombudsman etc), if they only asked Full or Provisional and you put Full, you can't be penalised.

They usually up the premium when you declare any restriction under bike modifications though...

What I'm saying is you can't get any quotes online? You have to call up?

you can put down it's restricted, but its roughly the same premium.

I'm not being retarded am I?

so if i was to take out an insurance policy from an online quote with a Full UK licence and a modification of a restrictor, i would be safe if i was to have an accident (touch wood)?

Not them saying "oh we're not paying as you have a restricted licence malarkey" Question

That's how I viewed it.

You have category A on your license. It has a condition attached to it, that you can't ride a bike with more than 25kW net power output, but that doesn't make it a different category.

If the insurer doesn't distinguish between A and A<=25kW, then that's their problem, not yours. The EU directive defining this is 21 years old, they've had long enough to figure it out.

The vast majority of insurers don't distinguish. In fact, eBike is the only one I've found who do, and they (hilariously) mis-list it as "A2". Which isn't currently a category, but will be as of next January. Eh. They also distinguish between when you passed your test, and when you got your current category (the From: date on the back of your photocard), and the Ombudsman has backed them up on that.

tl;dr version, don't sweat it, do it online, select "FULL" or "A" or whatever option they offer, but do take a screenshot of the page, and be careful to answer the question that they're asking - don't try and guess what they actually mean.

The issue of a restrictor is a puzzler though. It is a modification, most of them will rape you for it unless you get to speak with someone with half a brain (what's the chances?), but I can't see how it can raise your risk, so I wouldn't bother declaring it. The possible exception (again) is eBike, who don't apply crazy loadings for modifications.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated and pendulum Thumbs Up

I've just found this on the MCN website; https://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/INSURANCE/Advice/New-Rider-Learner/sep1010-comparison-sites-restricted-licences/

That clears it up for everyone who has ever wondered about insurance for restricted licences Thumbs Up

If you do Go Compare, the bike restriction is added as a modifcation - check the box and away you go. If I recall, there were only like 3 insurers that would quote me online though.

Good prices for me. Select Full licence, list all modifications for £0.00 extra loading on policy. I even declared my tank-pad! (It was free... why not).
