got BT020's on the viffer and im just starteing to get more of a feel for the bike but the tyres are holding me back... after 10-15 mins in the wet yesterday i would have thought the tyres would have warmed up some what but just easing the throttle on gently was causing the back to step out Neutral also this morning it was lovely and hot out and the roads were warm and after 10 mins i came to a junction slightly on the hot side and with moderate, not hard, braking smoothly i managed to lock the front up too Mad

the guy who sold the bike to me said the bike hadnt been used much over the last year or 2 and they are 3/4 warn so i was wondering if tyres can degrade or deteriorate some what over time if they are not used?

cheers
Aaron

Yes they can.

Also tyres take a lot longer to warm up to optimal temp when the road is wet.

i think a tyre has a shelf life of 5 or 6 years dot code on side of tyre tells you its age will read somthing like 4307 which would mean 43rd week of 2007

cant be sure of the exact shelf life tho but tyres do deteriorate with time yes

DEJ0305 that would be 2005 then...

yeah im well aware that it takes longer for them to warm in the wet but after 15 mins, including some high speed i would have expected a little warmth.... this was like riding on ice

You are supposed to change tyres after 5 years, apparantly that is lifespan of the rubber.

Your tyres are knackered. A bike like that, on those tyres, should lift the back wheel before locking up under braking.

I've ridden and driven a few vehicles with really ancient (20+ years) tyres before. They're mostly ok in the dry for cornering and accell, but really show up their deficiencies under braking and in the wet. Get some new ones.

You can't really compare a tyre on wet roads to how it performs on dry roads.

The front locked up because it more than probably over came the coefficient of friction between tyre and road surface.

In the wet you are meant to ride/drive accordingly

At least Double your overall stopping distance etc.

Tyres will be fine. Five years is a long time to keep a tyre on a bike though. Unless ye never have any fun on it. :
)
Only problem if when they are left with a weight on them they will get out of shape. If parking the beast up for a length of time you should hammer a load of air into the tyres or suspend the bike somehow.

the tyre is deff very old, the chicken strips have little hair line splits and the surface feels more like plastic than rubber Shocked and i know about the coefficient of friction and it would be able to take a lot harsher braking than moderate smooth braking from 25mph...

new tires soon then Neutral

its not about how long a tyre is on a bike its how long since it was made ive had brand new tyres direct from manufactor that are a year old then if your supplier has had them on his shelves a year thats 2 before you even set eyes on them and beleave me they can be on a shelf alot longer than a year

It's not how long the tyre has been on the bike it is how long the tyre has been around. I.e. when they where created.
