"Coordination of fiscal policy has to be conducted in advance, in order to ensure that national budgets are consistent with the European dimension, that they don't put at risk the stability of the other member states."

Here come the taxes!!! Sick Sick

Mmm...

Some very wooly language in there, looks like they're trying to head off another Greece-like scare.

I'm currently erring on the side of caution re. Europe and not wholly supporting it's expansion (some of my own wooly language there.) I think this peer review would very quickly become less passive and more proactive, I'd be suspicious on those grounds.

One assumes you'd just end up with the bigger economies dictating what the smaller ones got up to. I suppose if the smaller ones are living beyond their means expecting the bigger ones to bail them out then...

I have no clue. Surely someone would be able to tell if a country was fucking things up economically and some group or team could intervene at that point?

Thumbs Up

I fail to see how it has anything to do with the UK as we are not in the Euro therefore our economy really has no bearing on them, if the pound collapses because of our poor budgeting it doesn't take the Euro with it. The article does actually say it's not clear whether the suggestion is only aimed at single currency countries, most like it is if it's even a serious proposal which I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

Don't worry kids! Clegg has promised that Cameron can tell the EU to FUCK ITSELF whenever he wants to (which I am under the impression he wants to).

As I understand it, we still pay dues to the EU, we could find ourselves being hit coming and going in that respect. Not being part of the Euro means we don't get the benefit of any Euro based insurance policy but we still have to pay the premiums and submit budgets for scrutiny.

You're right, I don't think the Tories would stand for it, but as with so many other facets of being part of Europe (open borders, the Lisbon trety we never had a referendum on.) Once it's done, it's done and very hard to reverse.

Thumbs Up
