Went out for a nice 60mile ride in the 30c sun today and loved it. stayed nice and cool in my gear as along as i could keep above 30ish!

my bike on the other hand got hot, very hot! the engine casing got so hot to the point where i could barely touch it! Im not worried about it blowing up (its a CG engine) but iv never noticed my engine ever get that hot.

but come to think of it. i think i only felt the casing due to it being so hot today! Didnt smell any hotter then normal!

How does your bikes deal with the heat?

These bikes are ragged around some of the hottest dustiest hell holes in the world with no problem don't be concerned.

Have you ever been in a car left in the sun? Notice how you can touch the dash as it is boiling hot? Well that is plastic and can stand up to the heat. An engine casing is metal has hot oil inside it and there are thousands of explosions every minute going off very close to it, do you expect it not to be hot?

SV650 runs about 85 Celsius on a normal day.

Been hitting the 90s recently though.

No worries about it though! Although with shorts on the legs do get a bit warm! Laughing.

The S4 runs at about 88 on a normal day but often hits 105 in traffic, I've had it at 112.

That sounds about right to be fair, my Instructor's car is okay until 145. Neutral.

Can't find any decent information on what the SV's 'worry temperature' is really, will have to take a look.

80's/90's normally. I had about 112 today in traffic. Worry point is about 130 when 'HOT' starts to flash on the dash Laughing

Air cooled sucks in traffic

My bike is air cooled and starts to idle erratically, misfire and cut out when it gets excessively hot in traffic. I'm not 100% sure why it does this but have a few theories.

Running Rich.
Bad coil/leads causing issues when they get hot. New plugs so it isn't them.
Internal engine issues.

Bad intake rubbers (they're seized onto the engine and I have not got the tools to remove them).Luckily I do not commute. If I did, i'd have stuck with a cheap watercooled bike and not even consider the project bike in the first place.

Also oil cooled innit Steve, so maybe the oilways aren't as clear as they should be.
I once fixed my CG by finding a piece of rag inside my engine. kid yer not. Before that it would lose power when it got really hot. Rag out and all's well (as they say)

And no it wasn't me that left it in.

Anyway.... something else for you to scratch yer head. Neutral

After an extended period of riding my CG engine loses a good 10MPH once it gets too hot and just refuses to go as fast as it used to until you stop and let it cool down. I have a feeling this is also something to do with my spark plugs over-heating. I wish I had a thermostat on my bike Sad

130 is about the temp you should switch the bike off at, and let the fans cool it down. Coolant means the boiling point is alot higher then that of just water.

I saw 112 the other day on the CBR.

i got the hotter plug advised to stop that happening, but still a bitch to get to 60

Well mine hit's 60 now no problem, and faster if you see a hill, but I wasn't aware of plugs that operate at hotter temps? Could be useful for the summer.

Check the plug in there, chances are it'll be a crappy plug.

For the hot weather I ran NGK BR10EIX Iridiums in the kart, BR9EIX for standard weather, the 10s removed some midrange but made it run a hell of a lot better in the hotter weather.

If you fit an NGK DPR9EA-9 you may find a big improvement.

Not a good idea to just switch off when it's very hot unless something disastrous seems imminent.
Even in normal use all engines should be cooled from high working temperatures by being run at low revs and light load for a couple of minutes - because the oil/water is circulating it can dump the heat and cool the hot spots.

Do you really have much choice if you're stuck in slow moving traffic with a bike that doesn't have a fan?

As said air cooled is crap in traffic Laughing

But as soon as you get a bit of speed it starts to cool down nicely
