Yesterday bike started and cut out very quickly. All lights on the dash out - absolutely no sign of life.

Jumped from son's bike - great until leads removed then bike ran very lumpy until I killed engine. Still no lights on dash without jump leads.

Cue Optimate charger. Charged overnight - 13 volts. 1 hour later reading 12.7volts.

Can I safely assume my battery is pooped? ( it is approx 4 years old and having had the bike for 15 months I have done mainly local shorter rides)

Bike is CBF600SA / 06 reg.

Any advice or words of wisdom greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Caroline

Grab a volt meter (multi meter, whatever).

Throw the leads on the battery terminals, check voltage and note.

Watching meter, start engine and note.

Check meter at idle and note

Take revs to 1.5 to 2k, check meter and note.

If it's showing under 13v at idle AND at revs, time to look deeper than the battery (reg/rec).

IF it's showing closer to 14v idle and revs, but NOT exceeding 15.3v, then it's a good sign the battery is on it's bed.

As above, check to make sure the bike is charging the battery.

If it is invest in a bike battery charger and charge the battery up once a week if you are only doing short trips.

Does the bike have an alarm fitted?
