I am sorry if this is a dumb question, but I truly have no idea.

Is there such a thing as a template for a business which works along the same lines as ebay, maybe similar or in reverse?

Like, say if someone wanted to set up a site (although why one would is an interesting question) which was in tangential competition with the likes of ebay, or at least based on a similar sort of principle, only in a different (or niche) industry?

Do people (programmers?) write templates for such businesses, that you could just load your own details into? Or are they all tailor made (but practically copies of the same thing anyway)

I just about understand the concept of open source but not really.
Is this in any way related to what I am banging on about?

A business template and a website template are completely different.

A business template is a document with words and charts explaining how your business would work.

A web template is the actual thing customers would see.

Few tips.

Competing with ebay is pointless. To make auction sites work, you need a huge amount of traffic.

Making a website can be very easy but can also be very hard depending on what you want.

I think there are auction site templates but they will be very basic, and would require a huge amount of time and quite a bit of money to make it useable.

Open source simply means the program is completely open and programmers can get the code and change it to their needs and share it with others. Also means you are less likely to get spyware and viruses within them.

Cool, thanks, that sort of answered my question, but not quite.
And yeah, I thought open source was something like that, but couldn't figure out a way of explaining it (to someone else)

So anyway: I wasn't thinking of competing with ebay (obviously) ... just thinking that that style of thing could (and surely must have been) modified into a specific niche business.

Open source = https://sourceforge.net/

For each project there will be the code available to download separately.

Competing with eBay is not possible IMO. If it is for a niche market, you will still need a large amount of regular traffic to make an auction site work and even then, why would someone put their stuff on your site and not eBay when eBay will get thousands more people browsing it.

If it is you wanting to sell stuff at auction yourself but online then I am sure you could modify a script to make month long online auctions but you will still need traffic which is the hardest part for a new website with no Google rating.

No I wasnt thinking anything along the lines of competing, just trying to figure out if one could put one's own junk in a similar template.

Yes it is possible but depending on how complex and nice you want it looking/working then it could take a lot of time.

Hmmm, I can see I am going to have to reword my question.

*goes away for a little think*

There are numerous "clone" scripts out there that will emulate the likes of ebay identically or similar one's that have the same core functions.

Just do a bit of searching.

Yeah that sorta more where I was coming from.
"Clone" scripts.
Thats what I meant.
Auction or otherwise, it was "clone scripts" which was more my thinking. I just didnt know the word. Template may have been too generic a word.

Cool, ta. Karma
