My bike isn't running great at the moment as per a different thread. Unfortunately the bike doesn't have a rev counter so I can't know for sure how fast the bike is idling. I was thinking about the possibility of using a frequency analyser on my laptop to get an idea of how fast the bike is running.

I've done a search and found that people have used it on race bikes during a lap. Presumably the microphone would be able to pick up the ignition stroke and could therefore get a frequency reading.

Has anyone had any experience of this? Sorry if it's been covered elsewhere.

If im honest mate, it never bothered me having rev counter on the CLR.. you kind of feel it rather than look down at a clock..

Just warm the bike up and get it to sit at a nice steady idle speed, as slow as you can get without it clonking like a bag of spanners, but not so fast that if you engage first gear and release the clutch slightly it flies forwards Laughing

tbh it's more out of interest to know if it's possible and whether anyone has done it before.

Know what you mean about feeling it, it's impossible not too! Laughing

I would have thought that there is software out there which could analyse a sound and pick out a frequency.

If you really wanted to you could import the sound in to an audio editing tool, "zoom in" to the graph where it displays different levels of volume along the time line and count the strokes yourself.

ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston?

If you already have all the stuff then just give it a go, the worst that can happen is it doesn't work. If you don't, then there are probably more interesting things to spend your hard earned on Thumbs Up .

Yep will do, i've got a laptop with a microphone and found this https://www.relisoft.com/freeware/freq.html but haven't had a chance to test yet. Would be interesting to know if anyone else has done this before.

You can just get an aftermarkey tacho... Give it a 12v feed and stick the input wire into the low tension side of the coil.

This is more permanent (as opposed to being used once off) and requires money though?

Yep was hoping to avoid the need to spend anything, plus the brief hassling of fitting it etc.

I think it could be a nice simple solution for occasional usage.

Yamaha makers of musical instruments often record competitors bikes then perform frequency analysis to determine the firing timing of bikes.

You can hook up some electronics to one of the LT leads on a bike and count the microseconds between pulses for a stupidly accurate rev counter.
