Sorry for the huge post:

My Xmas project was to trace down a speedo fault I have been having for a few weeks, in the process I think I may have fudged my fuelling...

basically I removed every fairing panel from my 01 cbr600f including the front cowl to give it all a good cleaning and spray with ACF50... I had disconnected the battery a few days before.

I removed the speedo to check the plugs into the wiring loom for corrosion, all seemed pretty good but I had a look at the haynes manual wiring diagram and cleaned the contacts to the speed sensor anyway with some sandpaper...

Removed the tank, which has the fuel pump attached, and disconnected a pipe with a banjo type connector to the fuel rail, spilling fuel just about everywhere in the process. Disconnected the fuel return hose from the pressure regulator and pulled the whole thing off and let it sit at an angle to prevent spilling the remaining fuel. tried to get to the speed sensor which is on the crankcase in an almost impossible to reach position and settled for just unplugging it and checking the connections - all seemed ok... unplugged and replugged every thing a few times anyway hoping this would push aside any corrosion in the plugs.

Put the bike back together: I think I may have lost a washer on the banjo connector, and the fuel rail may have turned a very slight amount on tightening the cap bolt that holds the banjo on... otherwise apart from me trying to start it to no avail a few times without the front cowl and thus bank angle sensor attached all seemed good. Ah, the banjo connector had picked up a small amount of frost as the fuel evaporated and cooled it, freezing any water that had condensed (wiped it off before installation).

Took it out the next day so any spilt fuel had evaporated and whilst the speedo fault had not been fixed, i had also introduced some fuelling problem. First off it idled too low (2k) for about 30s (normally idles at 3.5k to warm up) then it rose to about 3k until the bike was warm where it settled to 1300 as normal... (was very cold out and normally it would idle high he start).

When riding it after abou 10-15mins it started to bog down, acting very jumpy at 3-4k until the revs would drop off and stall if i pulled the clutch in. The FI light flashed a few times as this happened and once it had stalled it would start immediately when required and act normal for another 10 mins. Every 10mins or so it would bog down again and eventually stall (not fun whilst filtering on the motorway).

Same thing happened the following day, took it out and it would ride fine for a few mins then (particularly after some high speed stuff i.e. 70 on the motorway) on slowing it would bog down, jump about and then stall when I dipped the clutch to stop it kicking around. As before it started again fine...

Does it sound like flooding of the engine (i had an old carb'd car would flood and stall after a motorway jaunt)? I was thinking the lost washer/slight turn (i.e. 5 degrees) of the fuel rail could be causing the fuel rail to lose pressure? Is there anything else I could have fudged when working on it that would cause this?

I checked the Fault code when I got back and all it had stored was code 11 (speed sensor/wiring fault) which was stored prior to my fuelling problems...

Make sure the vent in the fuel cap is clear.

+1 Ariel's advice, it sounds like the fuel can't get sucked out of the tank. Did you open the tank after the engine died? and did it make a 'schlomp' noise as you turned the key in the cap? If so that's the air rushing back in...

+2

sounds like a kinked breather. pull the tank back up and check the 2 rubber pipes are not bent, free and clear

Cheers guys, I have had the tank off plenty of times before and will kick myself if it is something as simple as a blocked cap or kinked hose...

Just remembered I hadn't updated this thread since I sorted the problem which wouldn't help anybody finding this thread in a search.

The problem turned out to be a missing washer on the banjo as suspected, this meant I had a fuel leak and presumably the fuel rail couldn't make pressure or something.

Anyway a new set of crush washers sorted it.
