OK, just finished an engine rebuild(valves, lapping and the pistons) on the girlfriends bike. A mate of mine mentioned that I would need to run it in for a bit after the work that has been done. Is this true?

It's the same dilema as to whether to run in a new engine or just hammer it.

Do whichever you're most comfortable with. Provided the engine's warm, riding it as normal won't hurt it.
