Liberal MP David Laws has been forced to come clean and admit that the man with whom he has been sharing a house is in fact his homosexual lover. Nothing wrong with that, you may say, we are after all living in enlightened times and gay men should no longer feel that they have to cower inside their closets. However Mr Laws has been showering his lover, James Lundie, with more than just a little bit of love and affection. He has been claiming that he is a tenant of Mr Lundie and has been claiming up to £950 per month from the taxpayers to pay to Mr Lundie as rent.
Parliamentary rules expressly forbid MPs from leasing accomodation from a ''partner'' and Mr Laws, who is said to be relieved that everything is now out in the open, has agreed to repay an amount believed to be around £40k.
Should he be forced to quit or should he be forgiven?

Definitely should be sacked/forced to resign.

Whether he repays or not, he has clearly been breaking the rules for his own personal gain. His sexuality makes no difference, nor may it be used as his defence.

This comment in the article made me lol:

Last time i looked, integrity meant: adherence to moral principles; honesty.

I rather think that someone who fraudulently claims money is hardly to be exonerated as a figure of great integrity.

Don't give a toss (?) over who or what he's shagging or who or what's shagging him but honesty and integrity are needed no matter what job you do. Bet if I'd been caught fiddling like that it wouldn't make a scrap of difference if I paid it back I'd still end up with my balls nailed to the garden gate.

Not entirely keen on the way its been portrayed as being more sordid because of the gay angle, doesn't really have anything to do with it, except to say; I can certainly understand him wanting to cover it up. People these days aren't as liberal as you like to think as evidenced by some of the 'humour' on this site alone.

Definitely had to go though, he's rich in his own right after a career in banking so not short of a bob or two.

The irony is, a lot of people thought he was a good man for the job. His sexuality and his expenses aside, if he could have helped to sort out the economy then he should have been allowed to do his job.

It's easy to criticise i'm not gay, but empathise a little. He certainly doesn't need the money.

He didnt need to claim expenses to keep up appearances.

He could simply have not claimed, as he secretly knew he wasnt entitled to. He didnt need to advertise why he wasnt claiming.

There has been a lot of talk in the media of sympathy for the guy, but would a benefit claimant who had fraudulently claimed far less, be treated so gently ?

At the very least he should pay the money back.

Mind you, this does make the liberal democrats a proper party now, that they have had one of their politicians caught.

Paying the money back is irrelevant, it's chump change, we need people of principles, and this man clearly has zero.

The very fact that despite his lack of morals being exposed and him completely admitting his fault, you still have politicians dismayed claiming he is a man of integrity speaks volumes about our political system and the farce that it is.

He should be put up against a wall and shot. Heaven forbid the message might actually get through to these shiftless fuckers.
