So guys and girls, last night I picked up my big girls bike so that I can have it looking sweet when I pass my test (all booked up for the end of July). Its a 2001 with 18000 miles on the clocks and has a few cosmetic issues. Guy I bought it from let me have the soft luggage to go with it too Thumbs Up

https://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r71/siany_album/TT2.jpg

https://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r71/siany_album/TT1.jpg

My list of stuff I need to do

- service (she ran a little hot after 40 miles down the motorway)
- front indicators
- new tank pad
- crash bungs
- sort out pillion pegs, heel plates and brake lever
- T-cut and polish out scuffs on the tank
- replace footpegs and rubber on the gear change

It doesn't show up too well in the pictures above but the pillion pegs and heel plates were plated but it peeled off over winter, im thinking of getting them powdercoated black or re chromed. Would it be cheaper to try and source some new ones or get them coated?

I figured I have about two months before I could be riding it and dont know masses about bikes so it will be a learning experience for me!

I have no idea, how the rearsets got so scabby either makes no sence to me.

If you can get your hand on some Speed Four rearsets do it, then are black and look much better.

Great 1st bike, I just got rid of mine earlier this year. The handling when set up properly is sweet.

Can't really offer more than encouragement, but on your list of things to do:

- They do run pretty hot generally, don't know how warm you were getting to but I used to regualrly see up to 103 Deg in summer traffic (I think that's where the fans kick in).

- Weirdly my RHS pegs/heel plates etc were pretty manky too, just not quite to the same extent, I just lived with it, but the Speed 4 ones do look nicer.

- The gear change rubber I replaced with one from an RD350 if I remember rightly for about a third of the price of the triumph one.

- Crash bungs I installed myself, I got Oggy Knobs (more for the name than anything else) and they were reasonably priced. All solutions require you to cut the fairing though and it's a really awkward place to cut out so I would suggest you get them done by a specialist as they were a bitch to cut.

Good luck! Thumbs Up

Thanks guys, im looking into getting the Speed 4 rearsets. Does it matter which year or are they pretty much the same bike year on year?

When we got back the fans had just started and the temp was showing 104ish, glad its a common thing Thumbs Up I looked into getting a Triumph gear lever rubber bit and the price wasnt too bad but the postage pushed it up to £12! I'll get one from a RD350 instead.

I have found a set of footpegs made by Oberon, any good?

As said, they do run hot, its nothing to worry about unless the temp display says 'HOT'.

They are awesome bikes, handling like nothing else and mine (Speed Four, but basically the same) never let me down.
Thumbs Up

Hi

I have a 2003 TT600 in red and silver with 46k on the clocks. Cracking bike.

It does run a little hot, but that is normal. I got it upto 106 in traffic last week.

The heel plates peeled on mine too. Was a cheap easy fix I just removed all the paint and furring then applied a few coats of hammerite smooth silver which is fairly close to the original and has lasted two years so far.

I have the Oberon foot pegs. They're well made, light and nice and stubby too.

As for the gear change lever rubber. I have heard either fazer or diversion rubbers are interchangable and easier to get. So worth a look.

Triumphrat.com have a forum dedicated to the triumph four cylinder super sports and is full of useful information.

I quite like the tt600's. Was looking at those as my first bike. Seemed very good value for money.
Ive just sorted my pillion footrest/exhaust hangers, they had gone a bit mankey and corroded - not as bad as your rearsets but make no odds. Its an easy fix.

Remove them, scrub them with a wire brush to get rid of the flaky stuff.

Rub them down with some no1 grit. Finish with some finer wet and dry.
Primer, Paint then laquer. (can even skip the primer stage - ive done this in past with still decent and long lasting affect)

My hangers look spot on now, near enough factory finish! Very Happy

Well worth an hour or twos work (most of this is standing round waiting for paint to dry.)

Should cost you about £10-£12 in paints etc.

Good luck on the test Thumbs Up

Cheers for the advice so far guys. I have indicators, footpegs and gear change rubber in the post already but will definately have a go at the heel plates and whatnot myself. Trip to the shops tomorrow for some supplies!

I had a quick ride up and down my road the other day Very Happy

Quick question though - the new indicators came with clear lenses. Do you guys prefer the amber original lenses or clear/smoked on your bikes? Personally I think the clear looks a little nicer....

Also here is a good place for most general bits for your bike.

And here is a good place for finding parts. It's in America and not cheap, and I've never used them. But it's good to get details of parts to pass onto your local dealer.

And finally here is the best fountain of knowledge for TT600's, Speed four's and Daytona 600's.

I second Triumph Online as a good place, although they are not always correct with parts then send out, they sent me the wrong bleed nipples and the battery they list for the Speed four is incorrect.

Speedfour.org is a pretty good site for info, they are practically the same bike. I didn't like the triumph RAT forums, too many idiot yanks, and the admin/mods seem to be pretty strict and OTT.

It may be worth getting the rearsets blasted/power coated should be pretty cheap sub £40 I would have though. Only problem is it will take time to do. Get them done black like the Speed Four

Nice bike, never really thought of looking at a triupmh for a sports bike tbh.

clear indicators don't always look right, my white TZR didn't look right with clear lenses, only way to tell is by swapping them and seeing which you like best Thumbs Up

I like the TT as a sports type bike because it's a bit more of an upright seating position and feels a little more comfortable than a few others I sat on. It makes a nice sound too!

Some progress, the bike is at my local garage having a service, turns out it had a few issues. The previous owner dropped it on ice which cracked the engine casing and caused the oil leak. The cam chain tensioner is rattling and needs replacing (I'm a bit dim when it comes to that though) and the chain and sprocket are knackered. So that is all getting fixed and they are going to jetwash all the oil and gunk off of the fairings too. I can do basic bike maintainence but don't feel at all confident with doing some of those things yet. I would rather watch someone else do it first.

I'm going to have a go at the rearsets myself though!

What side engine casing? The Left is only £36 direct from Triumph, I think the Right is alot more.

Just so you know. It is normal for these bikes to sound a bit agricultural. I thought there was something wrong with mine when I first got it. But it's a case of they all sound like it.
