Does it matter? Im looking at some and the OEM ones state left and right, whilst the pattern ones fit both sides. As far as I can see there doesnt seem to be any visible difference in design or the way the OEM ones operate.

Some have non-symetrical, swoopy patterns on the carrier that might look funny if fitted on the wrong side.

Like this one:

Would it make a difference to braking performance if you fitted them the wrong way around or had two "right" ones?

My mate, Eric, reckons that if you fitted two left ones then the bike would pull to the left when braking and that if you fitted two right ones then the bike would pull to the right when braking.
I'm not so sure that he's correct though so perhaps you should confirm whether or not this would be the case by asking at your local bike shop.

I doubt that could be true, it would work if a car had one brake stronger then the other.

Surely it's cheaper to buy a proper pair?

It might be relevant on ABS bikes where the ABS ring is on one side. Might also apply to any bikes that have stock discs with directional cooling holes or slots in. Fitting 2 right or left discs that actually have no differences other than cosmetic like stinkwheel's picture wouldn't affect the braking as Raffle's friend suggests, there's no reason it would unless the discs were significantly different in width and then it wouldn't pull but it might wobble, car's pull, either way it isn't relevant here.

If you fit used discs you're supposed to refit them to the same sides so that they travel in the same directin which makes sense due to them being subjected to heating and pressure in one direction you'd be best to keep them running in that same direction. I once bought a used set that weren't marked left or right though so just fitted them and never had an issue, wouldn't expect to though really, maybe if I was riding in the MotoGP it would be a bad idea.

Ask your mate Eric how a bike with just one disc manages to stop in a straight line!
