Hi, I have a second CG125 that I bought for £65. I will be trading it for a late 80's/ early 90's Yamaha TZR125. Are there any common faults I should be looking out for with the TZR? As far as I know it's in good mechanical condition, but looks a bit rough =] pics as soon as I can

any one who is willing to trade a tzr for a cg is getting rid of a fuct bike, not to worry, nothing like a good smokey project Very Happy
they are really easy to work on, but i'd expect to have to replace big end, small end, conrod, piston and rings,
and probably a hand full of bearings around the bike Very Happy

have fun Mr. Green

It's had a recent rebuild, its sat up the road, just been busy with work and college and haven't had time to go get pics. The lad's dad did it, and somewhere a bolt wasn't talked, causing a gasket to blow, he thought it was the big end bearings gone so bought a later DT engine lol

Agreed Thumbs Up First impressions are usually right and my first impression is that the other guy is sick of the hassle that the tzr is giving him and has decided to settle for something nice and reliable.

I'd still probably swap but take anything he tells you with a pinch of salt.

check rear shock for condition, swingarm for play, frame for dents (crash damage), exhaust near the manifold for major rust or welding work, wheels for dents and buckles, wheel bearings, steering bearings, discs for warps (front disc is £90 for a tzr!). some have rear drum brakes hopefully the one you intend to get has rear disc. check inside the tank for rust, check the forks are working smooth, no pitting or leaking seals...

engine wise they are dt engines so they are good.. i know its said to have been rebuilt but listen/feel for main bearings going (you'll hear it) and bottom end knocking.. it may have only had a topend rebuild...main bearings/crank/conrod normally need doing at about 30k. also dont forget to check the gearbox oil window for any creamy oil (didnt check mine and I got an engine full of mayo.. still ran and was only a waterpump seal).. dont be alarmed if its a little noisey either.. dt engines get like that with age Thumbs Up

check the gears all slot in fine, no jumping out of gear or miss changes..

....and if you need spares im breaking a 91 tzr 2rk (drum version and a set of spare newer mag wheels) Mr. Green Thumbs Up

This is something like what I want the TZR to look like

Just got a call, my mate has the second set of front plastics for the TZR, he's gonna drop them off soon, so may have a spare set for sale soon =]

Element, do you have a set of standard rear indicators? mine are nasty carbon fibre effect ones and they are broken, so I'd like to replace them.

hmm.. I think It came with aftermarket ones... Il have to check.. I have a polished tank cap too.. £30 new them things! Shocked..

looks like you done ok there.. in better nick than mine and I paid £200 for it (ouch).. Nice that you got rear disc.. I spent ages trying to find a half decent rear swinger with the hanger mount.. Your forks look alright too.. they are normally pitted at that age!

Thanks Element Smile I got a haynes manual today so will start on it before work tomorrow Thumbs Up It seems to be in fair condition, but it hasn't been looked after recently, the tank cap was removed (dunno why!) and when the cover blew off it got a little bit rusty on the inside, the last time this happened (to my spare red jerry can) I just put 20 nuts in it and some petrol, closed the lid and shook it up, then drained it and repeated it until the petrol was clear (i had a gallon or so of 6 month old stuff going spare XD) will this damage the tank? Also is there an easier way?

The DT engine is out, after a trip to a Yamaha dealer I'm £15 lighter as I need the cylinder base and cylinder head gaskets for the original TZR engine =]

Right, sent the old engines barrel off for honing last night, should be back tomorrow after I pick the gaskets up. I'm thinking of getting some braided brake lines for it, as I can get a set with a red outer coating which I think would look awesome, can anyone advise me on whether braided lines are good or not please? preferably listing any advantages/disadvantages of both types.

braided lines would be worth it.. the ones on your tzr are probably the originals so long overdue replacing.. The brakes will be slightly better since braided hoses dont expand under pressure..

go for goodridge and dont get those tacky anodized alloy banjos either...

Brilliant, I was looking at Earl's ones, they're doing a clearance sale, £24. Have you had a chance to see if you have the standard rear indicators for the TZR?
