foam and its purpose?

My old import 4t 125 (kymco stryker) has spongey foam on the inside of the fairings, i was wondering what the purpose of this was.
Would it be to muffle the noise of the engine?

I'm just curious as there is a bunch in my parents garage and i was thinking of putting some on the inside of the fairings on my NSR as it wouldnt add to much weight and the bike is somewhat rather noisey...

Any thoughts on the subject would be much appreicated.

Ahhh,
Might be worth a try lol.
Will give it a shot with double sided tape and see if it helps with the noise anywho i guess, if its a good'un will try something a little more permenant

rs 125's originally came with sound deadening foam on the inside of the main side fairings.
bloody useless stuff as it acted like a sponge, soaking up all the dirty water that splashed up inside.
i usually scraped it off,

To be honest, since sorting out the power valve servo (it was fixed open for the first 3 months i have the bike) its a hell of a lot quieter!

The performance effects are interesting, mighty poor performance low down and mighty good performance up top (i suspect it was fixed further open maybe?).

Anywho, might give it a half a*sed shot with tape and see how it goes!
