That output shaft looks bent to me.

I'm not surprised it snapped, it looks like that chain has never seen oil or ever been cleaned.

Front sprocket is worn to shit too, can I assume that the chain is ancient and neglected?

My chain fell off of my rear sprocket and wrapped once around my front sprocket a while ago. All was fine though. Just had to take off the cover, loosen up the back wheel and all was ok to put it back on straight.
