Hello there people, Ok so here's the situation:
-CBT on the 26th may
-Theory on the 1st June
-A2 (to be determined....)

I've been looking at bike for some time and now I have a vague idea of the price range. so the deal is a hornet 600 T-reg (1999) 37k on the clock, service history MOT till august. This 1100 little golden nuggets. I want to know if it i should buy it or not. ( I'm going for a viewing tomorrow)

Hornets are good bikes and the mileage shouldn't be too much of an issue really as long as it's been looked after.

I take it you've not ridden much yet, though? If not, then I'd suggest getting some seat time first, working out what type of riding you'll be doing most and then deciding what type of bike you want.

For example, if you're commuting in town then that looks fine. If you're doing motorway jaunts you'll probably want a fairing. If you're more of a sporty rider you'll likely want something a bit less upright.

Service history - evidence of regular oil changes and a check/adjust on valve clearances. Any dodgy idling/missing throughout the range - it should run smooth and clean. Noisy tensioners.

Other than that, standard bike checks; condition of fork seals, corrosion, sticky callipers, chain/sprocket condition/maintenance, evidence of being dropped

Awesome bikes, superb styling.

Downpipes can get really tarnished, if they look awful, i'd point it out, try and knock some money off, not a real problem, unless you come to remove them, where it can get tricky, bolt snapping tricky.

98 and 99 models have a 16" front wheel, which can be a bastard to get rubber for, if possible find a 2000 onwards model.

for a better opinion and help, go to www.hondahornet.co.uk dedicated club for Hornets.

Fork seals - check them for condition, ie any visible splitting or deterioration, and any weepage out of them. Fork strut should be dry, non corroded and smooth. Forks should compress and rebound evenly and cleanly without glitch and with the right amount of effort.

Dodgy running - listen to it; feel it. If it feels hesitant or sounds as if it's missing then it's not running right.

Doesn't have to be a test ride, just start it and listen it. If he has a problem with that I'd walk away.

Looks like it has aftermarket mirrors and that top box looks dodgy Laughing

Other than that I can't really comment much more on the bike. Pictures are tiny!

BTW, if you're going to restrict it I've still got the restrictors from when I had mine restricted (98'reg, same engine) Thumbs Up

There's no specific problems with Hornets to look out for, as far as I know. We barely get any requests for anything other than service items and crash damage. Good sturdy bikes generally just look out for the usual stuff as mentioned by others on here.

There is, CCT's. Though it's not so common. some people fit manual ones.

In neutral you'll hear some weird sort of noise but the noise should go away if you pull the clutch in Thumbs Up

BOUGHT it hehehehehehehe,
Went to his house, had a look asked him not to start the engine before i arrived (you catch out all the people who have battery problems mouhahaha)
Started the engine, sounded nice, looked for ratlle, noise, vibration, and to my pleasure i found nothing at all. I was afraid once the mot would expire, i would be left will ££££ to pay in repairs, so i got him to mot it on the spot , seen as thr garage wasn't not too far from the house (which means i got a little ride to confirm the condition of the engine, which was fine to my ears...)
i feel happy now. ok so it's still at his (im still in my exam period) hopefully i'll manage stress analysis, solid mechanics and mechatronics and by tuesday the bitch, my bad, i meant the baby is minneeeeee for me to sleep with ! (im only kidding, it isnt practical to try to sleep witha motorbike.........Razz)
Quote:

mmmm i still don't know whether i am to restric it or not, i mean from what ive heard even though it is restricted, the certificate isn't a legal document so why go through the hassle ? ( and please dont tell me because i might die on it and the 300 odd hours ive spent revising for these exams would have been for nothing and blablablalbalbla)
cheers people, here one more pic taken from my phone

oki so as soon as i get it, i will start to make it look better, begining with that engine protection cage, i thought i would get crash bungs instead? comments?
and i've seen m0l0t0v's hornet, man it looks great...... a few scratches here and there but no bodywork problems whatsoever. brake lever is bent so i think ill got with after market levers and mirrors, man they're fugly looking.
one question though: how do i clean it without wrecking it? I ask this Because i have a gift (that i'm sure no one else has) which enables me to undo, break down, strip, open up, autopsy just about anything, but then i find myself unable to re-mount, stitch, glue solder or screw it back to the initial state... Sad
cheers

Nice Thumbs Up

I miss my Hornet Sad It was awesome.

And I didn't mean the certificate. I meant the actual washers bit that restricts it. I personally took my washers out within 6 months of my 2 year period, so I'm not saying you will die. It's up to the person whether or not they want to ride restricted or not. Meh.

That cage looks a bit pointless to me TBH. Crash bungs will/should fit where the top mount for the cage is and it will protect the bike just the same really.

Not as much with the tensioners as you might think, there always seems to be the odd dodgy one granted, lots seem to go on and on. Good point though, something to watched on any of the 600's.

I did say not so common Laughing Razz

But yes, very reliable bikes. My one lasted with all the abuse, until I pole vaulted Laughing Sad

m0l0t0v i have had a look at your hornet, and i would like some general advice about how to clean it and make it look as sexy as yours.
what i want to do :
change levers(to asv ones)
clean everything (down pipes is the major concern)
wheels (paint, wheel strips?)
the throttle isn't that responsive (it goes a couple of degrees of twist before any juice is unleashed)
belly pan? (quite expensive they are)
suggestions

all this with a minimum of pounds because im low on cash atm ! thanks

That's illegal. Do a search on BCF, I think it was N30 that found out it was illegal... or someone.

That belly pan is only 40 quid, but then you gotta get it sprayed and make/buy your own brackets. The bellypan came with the bike when I bought it but it was a crappy cheap pyramid one. So I can't really give much advice on that I'm afraid.

Those levers don't look half bad... I always used my "modified" (Laughing) shorty brake lever. Basically the bike was dropped and it snapped but I was able to use it with 2 fingers so I kept it Laughing

Wheels, your best bet is getting them sandblasted and then powdercoated in the colour of your choice Thumbs Up (my local place does it for £40 per wheel, so £80 all in) I tend to find wheel stripes a bi overrated tbh, certainly on naked bikes. Don't mind them so much on sports/faired bikes Thumbs Up

Throttle is responsive, it just isn't a quick action throttle. You can buy a 50 quid gadget or you can use a cable tie and do it somehow... No idea how but other people have done it with no ill-effects. But I do it my way, which is twisting my wrist more Wink

Downpipes are easy. If you've got time (read a day) you can clean the entire bike and it will be glorious. Reason I say day is so you can take the downpipes and link pipe off and give them a real scrub/clean. If not you can do it on the bike bu some places will be hard to reach.

Simple job really, buy some wirewool form Halfrauds and some autosol. It's a case of applying the autosol to the pipes and then rubbing with the wirewool, and lots of elbow grease Thumbs Up.Use the coarse, then medium then fine and it will come up nice 'n' shiny.

Or you can do what I've done now and buy a polishing kit (just search on ebay - roughly 20 quid, 3 wire mops, 3 polishing mops, lime powder, polishing mops) and it makes the job much much easier, though you'll have to do some bis by hands. With the kit you can easily polish them up to a brilliant mirror shine in a short amount of time. I worked on my downpipes (off the bike) for roughly 1 hour and they were all mirror like.

But wirewool, autosol and elbow grease is more than good enough. Then regular caring on the downpipes once a week or so to keep it rust free. Thumbs Up Oh and buy an extenda fenda(like £17). attaches to the front mudguard and stops extra crap flying onto your nicely shined downpipes and coverings in crap, etc. (always comes in black but I'll be getting it sprayed the exact colour as my Hornet)

Cleaning everything else? Elbow grease, some cleaning stuff.... think I just used fairy liquid tbh... Rinse the bike with a hose first all around to get rid of loose dirt, etc. Then use 2 buckets, one plain water, one soapy water. Use mop with soapy water, clean bike, rinse with plain water bucket (so no stuff you wipe off stays on the mop and scratches the bike. After that I dried it with a lint free, microfibre free towel (so no bits come off the towel onto the bike)

Then I went OCD and use a clay kit (clay bar and quick detailer/lubricator thing) to really get all the crap off from the tail unit, tank, mudguard, lights etc. So smooth and shiny. Then dried again. Then a few coats of wax. Doesn't have to be expensive stuff. Think I just used turtle wax. Though there are better things out there. Buffed off and it was glass smooth, no water stuck to it and it looked B-E-A-UTIFUL

Just so you know when I did this on my bike (not taking off the downpipes, just cleaning, polishing, claying and waxing) I spent 8 hours on it Laughing

The look lasted quite awhile though. And I was no weekend warrior. It was my commuter, and my toy. Every day, every night. Cool

You need to buy some smaller chicken strips for those tyres. Smile
