English Defence League march in Newcastle.

My girlfriends little sister has been staying with us for the weekend and we took her to see a Dr Who exhibition at the life centre in Newcastle. When we got there we couldn't help but notice the fact that there was about 500 police officers lining the streets. With a few hundred riot vans, about 50 horses and a few double deckers full of police.

I had completely forgot that the EDL were marching through the streets of Newcastle today. When we got out of the exhibit we could hear loads of chanting so I decided to go and have a look. I didn't hang around long though, I don't thinking standing taking pictures of a bunch of racist scum when I have a skinhead and was wearing camo trousers would look good with all that police there. I also got a video but for some reason the audio only works on my phone so I won't bother uploading it.

Anyway they were just a bunch of pissed up skinheads with three different chants involving wanting their chipshops back.
The police were expecting it to kick off because Unite Against Facism were also doing a march a few streets away.
There doesn't look to be many police in the pics but in the first one I posted the street behind me is quite long and had riot vans up both sides. They were doing a circle and coming back down that street so police were mainly concentrated on that road.
It was quite peacefull if not racist. They had signs saying "looking for peace but ready for war", "UAF = Racist Nazi Scum" and "North East Infidels".

I reckon the suns numbers are wrong though there is no way they had that many people there I would say a few hundred if that. I didn't see anybody get arrested but the EDL lot were fighting funnily enough with their own stewards who were also EDL members.

They could have picked a better time to do this though there were a fair few children about because it's the first saturday of the Dr Who exhibition which was heaving. Plus the police weren't stopping members of the public from going anywhere. At one point we walked round the corner to find ourselves in the middle of a group of scum ranting on at the police over the road.

There were a lot of scottish EDL members there, along with some from wales aswell. We were walking up the street and there was a group of scottish behind us arguing about the lack of sign postage for the off-license.

Those delightful chaps visited Aylesbury a few weeks ago, the whole town centre pretty much got shut down for the day as they wandered around looking for trouble and chanting racist abuse.
I will, no doubt, end up footing the bill (via my council tax) for the assembly of a bunch of yobs who really should be back on the football terraces where they belong.

As for the Scottish and Welsh 'English Defence League' - that made me lol good and proper, unfortunately, not enough to cover my distaste for the whole sorry episode.

I watched a documentary on them on BBC iPlayer the other day. I agree with some of what they say they're about (mostly the anti-Islam stuff), but then you see them at their demonstration things and they're just a group of drunken hooligans.

I think if they wanted to do a proper demonstration they shouldn't get mortally drunk, shouldn't do racist chants and should look like a collection of respectable members of the public. If they went about it better then other people might agree with what they say. I'm glad they do get drunk and be dicks etc etc because it stops your average joe from wanting to join. Except Crana obviously.

I'm quiet curious to see how it went what with having followed their first protest through luton. The first protest that allegedly started these guys off started off pretty peacefully but ended up with riot police etc and got very interesting!

To be honest though, i can understand why all these kids are getting frustrated, having come from my family home to luton for studying (<2 years down here), the differences are ridiculous. Cambs is still a lovely place in my eyes, cant wait to GTFO of this crazy sh*t hole here...
