If I can sell the CB for half decent money I'll be looking to buy myself something in the £1500-2000 price range.

Saw this on ebay - https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160429045861 and I'm very interested. Having never ridden a Triumph or a triple, what could I be expecting going from a K4 GSXR1000 to that?

Bear in mind I'm not after balls out speed, just something that can make decent progress, is pretty comfy, semi reliable and makes a fair bit of noise.

Cheers, Thumbs Up

They are heavy, not comfortable but rock solid. Going from a Gixxer thou you'll probably hate it, but they are really good bikes. Certainly for the money you can't go wrong. Ride one before you decide.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

You will find it slow and heavy to start with.

But as in the above post try and get a test ride on one before you decide Thumbs Up

Exactly what I was thinking.

Methinks I'll need a test ride on one to make my mind up, but from what I've heard they sound like great bikes. I cant actually believe how cheap they are, seems like a LOT of bike for not a great deal of money.

Owned a T595 for about 2 years. Loved it to death. With an aftermarket exhaust that triple engine sound sublime. Handling for me was excellent, I felt everything that was going on at the rear end. Engine is strong and torquey.
Yes its heavier than your Gixxer and wont turn in so quick but once you get used to it you will be surprised. Its a solid bike with loads of character and I wish I never sold mine.
I had one niggling problem and that was that now and then it would just cut out, no warning and at random times. Also, i had starting problems, again very random, could be fine all day and then at that crucial moment wouldnt start. Left it for 10 minutes and low and behold it would start and run fine. I believe that they need to be kept on a trickle charge all the time as the batteries wernt up to the job. Also, maybe mne needed remapping as I had a custom exhaust fitted.
Anyway, go try one, I think you will be surprised.

Personally I'd go for a C/E/F model zx9 for that money. Hell, at the beginning of the year there were a few early R1s a chunk under £2k and seen a couple of K1 GSXR1000s at £2k.
Or consider a GSXR750 too - happen to know someone with a Y model for sale that'd definitely be in budget Razz (though is a genuine recommendation regardless).

For what else you can get, deals don't seem amazing, though not sure how much prices have gone up since winter.

Our kid had a mint, black 595 for years, getting rid of it for an 02 R1.... He's regretted it ever since.

Obviously the R1 is a 'better' bike, by his own admission, but it lacks something that the 595 had.

That was my point as well, my current bike is a 2002 R1 and its one hell of a bike, but that Triumph had character and I would love a chance to ride it again.

I think this is my situation.

I cant really see me buying a bike other than the GSXR in its class that would have such a 'wow' factor. Once you've experienced something that accelerates and corners like they do you will only really better it marginally. Not much point in going from something like that to a similar age R1/ZX10 (although I wouldnt mind a go Twisted Evil).

Thats why I've always liked bikes like the 595 and ZX-7R, conventional bikes in there setup, but they just seem to have something that sets them apart (I have ridden a 7R, and loved it).

Is the word I'm searching for 'character'?

I had a 1998 Daytona 955 for two years. It was a great bike, an excellent all rounder. I could commute, scratch and tour on it and it never missed a beat.

It was quite uncomfortable but I had it when I was 23 so it didn't bother me. It had a huge underseat space that I kept a chain in which enabled me to commute to work and leave it in the centre of Reading.

It didn't turn quickly and I couldn't manhandle the bike easily, but with a bit of finesse and forward planning it could hustle. It did sound great with a can.

for £1500 you can't go wrong really.

I've always considered 'character' to basically be the 'failings' of a bike, though the best kind of character for me is bikes that encourage you to go that little bit faster, lean that bit more.

Modern sports bikes seem to be so competent relative to the speeds that I want to go on the road that they just make it feel too easy.
So I can understand wanting a bike that makes you try a bit more, but I prefer it to be the engine that's lacking in out right power, rather than a little ponderous handling with a bland power delivery Razz.

I had the same problem with mine when i bought mine last year, fitted a new battery and never had a glitch since!

Generally though, a reliable, stable, comfy, quick bike that looks IMO the nuts and sounds awesome with any race can Very Happy

good value for a british bike too!

Definitely going to try and get myself a test ride on one of these, the more I look at them the more I like them. Cant believe how cheap they are as well, loads of bike for not a great deal of money it seems.

Cheers for the replies people, appreciated, Thumbs Up.

I like them even more now.

Just got some quotes with the bikeinsurer and they came back TPFT £123 and Comp £243, on a 595 valued at £1700.

Very Happy

If you havent ridden a triple engine before then make sure you do.

I think they offer the worst of both worlds rather than the best of. Ridden various versions of the large Triumph triple now (and own a Sprint ST). All dull forgettable engines. Very good at what they do but a 4 cylinder is better & a twin is just as good whilst being a lot more interesting imho.

If we go by past bikes and the general consensus of the masses then yes I may have a failure of taste in bikes.

However I'd be joining you in that group, what with the TT 600, T595 and Buell's. Wink

I think the big triple works well for the speed triple - as big naked bikes tend to use detuned 4s with a flatter delivery, however for the others I'd quite agree. Even in the 675 the single just seems like a little blander 4.

It was in my garage, not now - however it does have fresh MOT and the FI light issue is fixed. I'll give dusty a shout on Tuesday and ask him.

Right, I've got my eyes on a few of these now, and have pretty much decided one of these is going to be my next bike.

What should I be looking out for when looking at one, if anything? I've heard they seem to have pretty bulletproof engines, but I've also read that some can have leaky tank seals, is this a major problem?

Cheers, Thumbs Up.

There used to be a dedicated messageboard for the T595 but its expanded now to cover all models. Take a look in the forum for everything you need to know about the T595

Hi, I very nearly bought one myself, early T595s had a potential issue with cracking frames if I remember right, they had a proper recall though so chances of finding one with the issue there are pretty slim by now, worth a check though. Outside of that, I also remember reading up on gearbox issues, either second or third? I ended up not buying the example I was looking at as it had lunched it's engine fairly hard a year or so before and whilst it had a few tidy extras on it, it wasn't really worth the money the guy was hoping to get (Quite a lot more than I could have gotten a tidy and completely standard bike for).

Definately a bike I intend to own someday though Thumbs Up

Cheers for the info.

Shall be something I'll be looking out for when I get a test ride on one.

What sort of money should I be looking at for a half decent '97-'00 model? I was thinking around £1800-2000?

1500 was the ballpark for a good early T595 when I was shopping around, that was ~novemberish though.
