I have a slight problem with the wife's bike/Autocom setup. She has an ER5 with a bike powered Autocom 200 which is connected to a puxing 777 radio (running off its own battery, i.e. not bike powered).

We've noticed that once her revs go above about 3000 the radio doesn't transmit (or at least I don't receive it and she doesn't receive my transmissions). She still gets the roger beep from her radio, so the VOX is definitely kicking in and trying to transmit. It may be that the radio thinks it's transmitting but suffering electrical interference which is blocking the signal.

When we are moving along if she pulls in the clutch so the revs drop everything works fine. The opposite is also true, if we sit at the lights everything works fine but stops if she revs the engine to about 3k. Transmissions both ways stop - I can't receive her and she can't receive me.

The radios are attached to an external aerial mounted on the number plates using the kit from the guy at Biker's Oracle.

Does anyone have any ideas - it's frustrating that we can only talk when almost stationary as it defeats the purpose of the radios?

Thanks
Dae.

Not sure I can be much help here, but can you connect other devices to the Autocom (ie a mobile phone or iPod, etc), that aren't affected by the revs on the bike?

If someone were riding pillion, with two headsets, would the direct connection between them be interrupted?

Just trying to think of diagnostics to isolate the problem to the radio or the Autocom.

I had a simalar setup with an autocom 200 and a set of cheep radios. I never had any issue.

My guess would be interference from the ignition module or a regulator problem. Run the Autocom from a 9V battery and see if it makes any difference. If it works then move onto the bike and rev the engine to see if it stops working.

It will either be power or interference.

Thanks for the tips - running of the 9v battery was going to be my next thought.

The Autocom also has a Zumo GPS and phone working perfectly. It's definitely not the radios as we've tried swapping them round and also using a completely different make with the same results.

The rider to pillion doesn't seem to be affected.

I have the Autocom 300 on my bike with the same radio and GPS (a Honda CBF1000) and everything works fine.

Where is the radio in term to the autocom - both under the seat? I was reading somewhere the other week that this can sometimes cause interferance (although I think that's more likely if your bike powering the radio as well).

I'd also try running the radio with a normal aerial rather than the one mounted to the bike to see if that makes any difference?

I think I'd try to isolate the radio as far as possible from the bike, ie self-powered and aerial not attached to the bike.

If you get no joy there, maybe try some support from Autocom?

Interference from electrics to radio receivers used to be a big deal years ago with cars - used to have to put a resistor/coil thing inline with the power. But as you aren't powering the radio from the bike... difficult to pin-point.

I've tried it with the radio just bike powered and using its own aerial. That's the reason that I got the number plate mounted aerial - I initially thought that it was a range thing and not an interference thing.

I'll give them a ring and see what they say, but their customer service has dropped considerably since the buy-out - last time I spoke to them about something they were less than helpful.

Thanks anyway,
Dae.

i dont know how these things are set up, but from previous experience with modeling and radios i can tell you thats its going to be from interfearence.

your best bet is to rap some tin foil around the radio reciever (not the ariel!!!). sounds crazy but it helps block all other signals from the ecu or whatever else might be interfearing.

hope that helps!

Funnily enough the guy I work with just suggested the same thing. He also mentioned that he has a lead from Autocom that gets power from the battery and uses a switched supply to feed the relay to turn the Autocom on, which also has a noise filter in it. This got me thinking and my Autocom is also powered from the bike battery via a relay, whereas the dealer who fit the wife's has powered it directly from a switched source near the fuse box.

I think I may end up having to put together a number of things to finally get this sorted.

I appreciate everyone's ideas and I'll update you when (if?) I manage to cure it.
