If it only started doing it when you squirted it with water, electrical seems the first place to look.
I think if you got water in the fuel it would stop altogether more likely.

If you're lucky it might sort itself out left to dry in the wind - it is nearly June after all.
Most likely problem areas where moisture is lurking would be spark plug cap, HT lead from plug, and the Ignition Coil (HT leads go to this).
The coil can fail in rather strange ways giving misfiring and intermittent loss of power.
Quite cheap to replace and you should be able to do yourself.
Also check the earth lead is making good contact with the frame.
If it looks less than perfect undo it, clean up, and re-tighten.

First thing to try - look for water in plug cap, spray with WD40 or similar.

Disconnect every wire you can find and attack it with WD. And don't miss the ignition switch itself (and the kill switch, if your bike has one).

If water gets in the coil, normally you get misfiring or weirdness when the motor is running, so it could be that. Bearing in mind that the electrics are designed to withstand frequent downpours, it takes a fair bit to stop bikes running generally speaking.

I had a very similar problem on my GPR where when I twisted the throttle could only get to 3k revs on full and it would just cut out and die.
If you've replaced the petrol, checked airbox etc as stated and your spark is blue as it should be then you can do exactly what I did which cost me 60 pounds to get diagnosed, Decoke your exhaust....

I had something if i recall similar, its possibly is electrical

Have you got a dodgy ignition switch? Side stand switch and clutch switch and also kill switch should be by passed to eliminate.

A slight vibration can break a contact and kill the engine!

Check the above and see how it goes

Sorry just realize its a moped, but do check the switches thou esp the kill switch and ignition switch.

I meant take the plug apart and short the circuits to by pass the switches. Spraying WD-40 doesn't always work. You need to actually physically take the plug off the loom, and bridge the correct pins to eliminate any circuit problems.

Your need a multimeter to perform this task properly

you need to get the covers off, and disconnect the plug and bridge the connection so its permantly on.

You need a multi meter to find out which wire turns on with the ignition. Then bridge the connection that the ignition harness plugs into.

While you have found that out, see what the engine runs like.

An intermittment (which i had a problem with) fault with the ignition can cause lots of headaches when its looks ok but it isn't

So it's idling ok, but failing/bogging down as soon as you crack the throttle open. This happened when you got the bike wet, so I'm going with water in the carb.

An electrical problem should manifest in a more random way.

If the carb has an accelerator pump, then water likes to sit in the bottom of the chamber and kill your engine every time you open the throttle far enough to bring the pump into play.

Drain the carb into something like a glass, so you can look for water in the fuel. My current favourite easy method to fix this problem is pouring meths in the fuel. Meths binds with water and stays flammable. Petrol will not mix with fuel, so the problem won't fix itself.

Drain the fuel as Robby said, far easier.

Does the carb have an accelerator pump?

When you stripped and cleaned the carb, did you clean the pump chamber?

How well did you clean the carb? Every jet and needle out, every tiny little passageway cleared out, accelerator pump out and cleaned? Followed by a rebuild to factory settings, including the mixture screw and float height.

Or did you just blow down it and not even take the float bowl off?
