The price for mushrooms & similar is ridiculous for what they are. So has anyone ever made there own? I'm not after anything for when in motion, just very slow spill stuff.

it's for a naked bike so i guess i'd have more options.

Be interested if anyone has. Thumbs Up

A mate of mine uses skateboard wheels on threaded rods on his crosser.

Isn't that what they are anyway, just with 'R&G' printed on them & a 50+ price tag. Mr. Green

Sounds interesting, has he 'tested' them yet? For the bolt i'm guessing you need a very good steel one & not just your everyday bolt?

Thought you was on about that thing holding up the screen as the photo loaded. Laughing

Very odd looking thing, some kind of wheel? Looks like it clears the engine nicely tho.

The one that clears the engine looked like a wheel of a childs scooter.

If you look there is another wheel just below the left grip. It looked like a plastic wheel.

Interesting. Wouldn't really fancy one connected to the frame tho, i could imagine it getting bent somehow taking the impact.

What are these strong bolts & what's the best positioning as i'd want to find a hole on the engine that uses the thickest size bolt.

Is there any modifying needed on the wheels to get the bolt through?

i know R&G fit them to the part of the frame where the engine has the most mounting point. Confused
you have to be carefull where to fit them as the cheaper ones normally fit at the easiest point and if you have an "off" you can bend the frame and write the bike off.

I had images of skate-board bokeys bolted in thier entirity to teh side of a crosser for a moment then.....

THEN I saw the err... is it still a Kwak 5? with teh wheel on the side and thunked 'err ACTUALLY, if that was turned through 90 degrees, it MIGHT not be such a daft idea!"

Now thinking of how I can attach a supermarket trolley wheel to teh bar-ends of the G/F's bike for when she's trying to get it down the side of the house!

R&G also use embrittled bolts, so the bolt should bend and snap before the frame mount will, unlike normal strength non treated bolts.
Bear that in mind!

if you're a cheapskate and want 'something' there are loads of copies on ebay for between £5-15

my race bungs for the trackbike (shorter than R&Gs with a ally base to help the bung spin) were only £25

a far reach from the £60+ R&G charge

R and G do actually spend quite a bit of time working out how strong to make their protectors so they don't grip the road, don't damage the bike any more than they should and lots of other factors.

Just bolting some skateboard wheels to the side of your bike is missing the point a little bit I think. We've all heard the stories of crash protectors doing more harm than good, and of course top race teams don't use them, but top race teams can afford to replace an engine case or a fairing and they need to save as much weight as possible.

Despite these things I think that R and G in particular make crash protectors which by and large do prevent more damage than they cause by a significant margin.

Here's my crash protection.

They were once skateboard wheels, I've upgraded them to proper bobbins now though.

Cheers to all of the above.

Marjay has a point.

Are engine bars usually better then mushrooms? If i had to shell out i'd rather the bars because they seem like they'd take the impact much better.

I have no 1st hand experience of door-stops, I do have experience of bars.

So does the Last SMIDSY that tangled with me...... litterally....... lost the front of his korian Kaki thing to them!

I got a couple of scratches in teh chrome, he needed a new car!

Funniest bit was he pulled out on me, I glanced off his wing, bumper tangled my bash-bars, yanked his front end off and then HE ran over it! Whoops!

Dont think a mushroom would have done much!

I had what i have fitted to my WR450 on my CCM sm, exact same job, i came off (lowside) and it slid a hell of a long way down the road, the axel bobbins saved me a lot of damage, and they didnt bend atall.

Bolted up tight to the axels with locking nuts probably helped.

i see what people are saying, maybe in some cases they wont work, but in some they will.
They saved me alot of money, so i cant fault it on a bike like that.

as for my kwak 636, i put propper R&G bungs on it.

steve.
