 Posted: 12:06 - 07 Feb 2010 Post subject: BCF server move - bugs / feedback |
 |
|
If you're seeing this then you're now browsing BCF in its new home, a newer and more powerful server which will provide the foundation for some forum improvements over the news few months. If geeky facts are your cup of tea - BCF is now running on PHP 5 with a MySQL 5.x backend DB. xCache is used for an opcode cache, and Memcached is active in a few places to buffer some of the more intensive database operations.
What does all that geek speak actually mean?
Hopefully, a faster forum less prone to traffic jams at peak times and less "the server is busy" messages.
Oooh, shiny. How can I help?
If you spot any bugs or have some feedback to make on the new server, please post it here. Please check that what you're posting isn't already known, though.
Known issues
1) The index page will no longer track your unread forums between visits. This feature made sense when the forum was small and it was possible to realistically read everything, but these days the database is far too big for this to be fast enough.
2) If you post a new topic and go back to the forum index, your new topic may not appear for up to 30 seconds. This is intended, and is a function of how the site now caches pages to save on database load.
3) Profile pages and the stats page are still quite slow. I haven't got around to optimising every bit of the site yet; quite a bit more work is still to be done. The main thing was getting the site onto the new machine and seeing how it copes under load before fiddling further.
4) You can now change your own username. Hopefully people will be sensible with this, but be warned that you can only change your name once very 7 days and it will cost a small chunk of your karma. This will hopefully keep people from flip-flopping usernames (which is just confusing) while keeping it there for when you really do need to use it.
5) Some usernames have been changed automatically. If your old username had any funny characters in it, the board will have stripped them out. In some extreme case where "~~Dave~~" and "~Dave~" both existed, the user with the higher postcount would have gotten "Dave" and the other user "Dave2", etc. Currently allowed characters in usernames are: a-z 0-9 - _ . # ! ? ' | @ ( ) [ ] & (the symbols in red are being removed soon and are no longer allowed in new usernames). ____________________ 3516 Miles, 11 Countries

Nothing to report, other than genuine thanks for your work in improving BCF ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

Being able to change names will be nice, hopefully won't get too confusing. Being able to change titles would create anarchy Although I'd love to be called The Little Tourer.
Anyway, top job Korn, the server is one hell of lot faster!
Oh, and changing the old servers posts to bad English was genius! ____________________ will never give up his CG. I look at my fuel gauge more as a progress bar than a fuel gauge.

Good work on the forum korn, it's a hell of a lot faster. And i lol'd at 'cornflakes'. was a bit disappointed when i had no cuddly kitten to put my mind at ease though.
Just checked Chat and IRC works again
Good work though, glad it doesn't take an age to load a thread anymore

Page loads are a lot faster.
Using the 'view newest post' feature in any board index kicks me back to the old server for some reason ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I have found a proper bug
When I have read all of the threads in an area (ie. General Chat or Feedback), when I return to the index page it still tells me that there are unread posts. This continues until I click on mark all topics as read in that particular area. Once I have done this, it seems to be fine.
Not a massive problem, but annoying none the less ____________________ I spend all my money on bikes and beer, the rest I simply waste! |

I've found another bit that's borked as well:
If I go in to and section and try to mark all as read without actually viewing a thread first I get this error:
Could not access topics
DEBUG MODE
SQL Error : 1064 You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ') AND forum_id = 52 AND topic_moved_id = 0' at line 3
SELECT topic_id FROM bcf_topics WHERE topic_id IN () AND forum_id = 52 AND topic_moved_id = 0
Line : 213
File : /var/www/bikechatforums.com/viewforum.php
Pick the bones out of that one ____________________ I spend all my money on bikes and beer, the rest I simply waste! |

Old Thread Alert!
The last post was made 16 years, 1 day ago. Instead of replying here, would creating a new thread be more useful? |
