No the core doesnt need to be earthed.

Check for a spark by removing a HT lead from the spark plug, put a spare plug in the HT cap. Hold the spark plug against bare metal on the engine and turn the engine over. Best done at night when its easier to see. Or in a dark garage.

Is it not running properly?

post pics of the coils in question.

Coils do need to be earthed, if you take away the earth then you'll find you have no spark or you end up with sparks where the coil is barely touching the chassis, bolt them on.

I had this problem with a VFR400, had no spark on 2 cylinders and found one of the coils wasn't bolted down tightly enough to the frame.

Ok so new plugs today. So if the spark is still weak and the coils are bolted to the chassis what's next to look at cheers

More likely the coil had a slight fracture and bolting them down closed the broken circuit.

If a coil has two low tension inputs then the bolt holes at the ends of the cores do not need to be earthed. The ZZR400 uses the same type of coils and wiring as the 600, GPz900, GPz550, Z550, ZZR1100 and any number of Kawasakis with twin output coils. These DO NOT have to have the core earthed. I run a GPZ550 coil on my BMW R100 engine, and that is cable tied to the battery mount on the dnepr frame. It is not earthed to the cores.

Measure the primary resistance across the input terminals. Kawasakis usually require a 2.2 ohm coil. Maybe someone has put a 3 ohm col on though it really should still run. The col may also be faulty and read much higher.

Low tension is earthed via one of the terminals via the CDI. High Tension is earthed via the spark plug going back to a common earth with the low tension primary. The core does not need to be bolted to anything.
