Sorry but i have been told these are illegal on a motorbike yet there fine on such cars as Honda Civics, am i the only one who doesnt see the logic in this?

They say you want your bike to be more seen so why not allow xenon lights legally its beyond me.

There are certain laws regarding automatic height adjustment and washers. I think as long as you have those you can have xenons. I think xenons are a factory option on some BMW bikes?

Hi

Not sure that they are going to make a bike more visible than normal lights!

Any vehicle with HID lights must have some way of keeping the headlights aimed (ie, self leveling suspension or automatic headlight adjusters) and also a headlight washer. They also need to have the appropriate E markings on the headlights. Pretty much no chance that any car of bike fitted with aftermarket HID kits will comply with these rules.

All the best

Agree with Kickstart. Properly fitted Xenons aren't designed to make you more visible to other traffic, they're designed to give you better vision at night, and they do. You really can tell the difference coming from a vehicle with Xenons to one without.

Ok so you need a system which adjusts the lights to the road and say if i was to put the xenon bulbs in a honda cbr they would work right?

You shouldn't be able to tell. Aftermarket ones often dazzle the hell out of people though.

My car has factory fitted Bi-Xenons. Going from that to a car with halogens the difference in what you can see on an unlit road is very noticable.

Hi

Sorry, think we are talking at cross purposes. I meant you shouldn't be able to tell the difference between normal and HID lights when they are coming towards you.

All the best

Yeah agree, that's what I was trying to say to the OP. Xenons are designed to give the user better visibility at night, rather than making you more visible to other road users.

Also agree that aftermarket HID kits (and even the "Xenon filled halogen bulbs") do dazzle oncoming traffic.

To be legal they need to have washer jets and auto adjust height motors. I think I saw a post on here the other day from somebody that had aftermarket Xenons and it had failed it's mot due to direction or beam pattern.

Along with headlight washers and appropriate E markings on the lights. Pretty much no chance of getting all this on a bike.

Bulbs with just a different gas in them make stuff all difference. Xenon HID kits use a very different way of generating light and have an extra box to be hidden as well. One issue is that they do not come on instantly hence fiddles are needed to allow you to switch between dip and main beam.

Getting it through an MOT and being road legal are very different.

All the best

I inherited an HID setup from Mr Tot (aka Titz) - was great apart from it 'switched off' when you hit a bump - he did admit that is wiring skills were a bit lacking...
On my 176,000 mile ZZR600 I had 140/100 bulbs fitted which did the business!

They'll work, but will probably give off a lot of glare, like the car on the left:

They would work fine and be perfectly legal, but make virtually no difference. They are just bulbs, not an HID setup.

HID lamps run hotter than 'standard' lamps so may overheat the light's housing/s
Also the current needs to be higher to drive the HID lamps so has to be heat resistant and capable of carrying the extra juice.
Kits are available on Ebay for about £60 where the 'Booster Pack' which steps up the power to drive them is about the same size as a fag packet. Easy to hide. Some lamp holders need to be cut to get the wiring in and allow heat to vent.

They will probably be illegal but if you don't ride like a twat flap then probably no-one would bother.

dunno what HID kits you've been looking at but...

1) they do not run hotter, temparature generated is very little compared to a normal halogen lamp...

2) once they are 'ignited' the current falls back to normal somewhere between 35 - 60 watts depending on the particular kit.

3) i would reccomend against wiring directly to exsisting wiring as the 'ignition' cycle (turning the lamp on) can draw over 15Amps, therefor i reccomend wiring it... a) with it's own fuse and... b) us a relay so as not to load original wiring.

4) although not legal if set up correctly in my experience your unlikely to get stopped i've had mine nearly 2 years without trouble.

5) and lastly if your worried about MOTs then just bung a normal halogen bulb back in for the MOT... bit like keeping the original exhaust for the MOT...
