Have you any means of fastening it onto the pillion seat?

Make a heat shield. Tin foil, pie tin, whatever you can get in the services.

You have free strap to play with. Perhaps run the straps over from the one on the other side and use them to lift the pannier up and away from the exhaust? Failing that, poke a load of twigs inside and across where the hole is. Wood shouldn't catch fire off an exhaust and won't melt either!

You are fucked.

You need to stop the heat from getting at the fabric.

You will need to find a heat/fire resitant material.
First thing to mind is to buy a fire blanket from B&Q or possibly the petrol station at the services.

Nothing else for it.
Anyother method will only deflect some heat but runs the risk of more damage.

Was the frock you are wearing tonight in that bag? Crying or Very sad

tape and a book just tape the book over the hole, paper burns at 235C and it will get crispy but won't burn.

It burns at 451F as in the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

The film based on and with the same title as the book, Fahrenheit 451, is the first film that I have recollections of watching as a child. It is a fantastic film and one that everyone should try to see.
It should not, by the way, be confused with Fahrenheit 9/11 which was a load of crap cobbled together by left wing director Michael Moore.

For extra karma-points why not BUY a copy of Farenheit 451 and tape it to the underside of the pannier. If it did catch fire you could at least console yourself with the irony of the situation and it would provide good pub-tale-material in the future Smile
