Hey guys, I'm asking this on behalf of my bro-in-law.

He has recently bought a GSXR1100 wp and he has found a problem.
He can sort out nearly anything on his own but this one has him stumped.

The bike starts no probs but giving revs, it starts to splutter and sounds like its mis-firing at around 4k revs, consequently it cuts out. there is a definate popping and tapping sound that speeds up when he revs and slow down when he eases off.

The problem he thinks is around the carbs, because it seems to be letting in too much fuel.
You can smell the un-burnt petrol, he has had them balanced but not sure what to try.... any ideas??

Thanks

Might be the carb but its got to be worth checking the spark plug and leads.

thanks for replies,
I was thinking the jets but wasn't sure.

He has been working on it for a couple of weeks now so he's fairly confident it's to do with the carbs.

I think he now knows the problem, just can't fix it his self.
Looks like a trip to the garage....!

Thanks again

It could also be electrical or mechanical timings. Things like a cam chain 1 tooth out are possible if some muppet has failed at rebuilding the engine in the past. Or the ignition advance might be messed up.

I would have thought that'd result in it lunching the valves?

Late opening inlet valve, or an early opening exhaust valve won't hit the piston but will make it run like a bag of shit.

Ignition timing not advancing will also cause it to fuck up worse as it revs.

Running rich due to excessive choke, then turning the tickover down will make it run normal at tickover, then die when revved.

A holed diaphram, bent needle or blocked jet could also cause the above problem.

The parts to fix it will be cheap or non existant. The garage will however charge a fortune for labour so any problem solving you can do at home can save alot of cash!
