Had a ride on the MT-10

After a bit over 2 hours I think I need the MT in my life, without trying to echo professional reviews the main points for me are.
Comfort, it's about equal to the Multistrada, no aches or pains after 2 hours on the standard seat and although the ride is firm it did not kick me in the kidneys like the STR did.

Wind protection, the blast hit just below my helmet at motorway speeds with my lid in clean air, no buffeting at all even well into naughty speeds and less wind noise than the Multi with either Puig or touring screens. (Shoei GT-Air)

Handling, it's got the R1 suspension softened up slightly, the thing is on rails and just inspires way more confidence than the Multi, feels like a bigger, more grown up STR. For such a short bike it's very stable.

Brakes, the rear triggers the abs with about the same pressure as the Multi takes to just start working, the front is progressive and powerful with no soft feeling that some reviews moan about... Then again, the guy who had it before me was a motocross racer and thrashed the stuffing out of it so they were well bedded in.

Fuel economy, Errr, pardon? Look at that lovely metallic blue... Fuel economy, it has some, I did £10 of shell's finest 95 octane glug in 61 miles (31mpg) without riding like an arse all the time, it's a thrashed demo mule and not fully run in yet so that may get better with age... The multi is averaging 51mpg since it's re-map.

Gearbox, very nice, it doesn't know what a false neutral is (The Multi finds them between any gears) and probably doesn't need a quick shifter, although one is available and it has a slipper clutch, I did blip the down shifts just to hear that crossplane engine.

Engine, it is a fantastic piece of kit, nice growly punchy and very smooth, overtakes can easily be dispatched on the torque above 5K or knock it down a cog or 2 to save the front tyre and engage 'batshit' mode.

I really should have worn my leathers as I found myself moving sideways and hanging a knee out, then I thought 'No you fool, if that knee touches you've just written off a £200 pair of trousers, and it might hurt'


All in all, Needs more noise and maybe the re-map will improve the economy. The looks will always divide opinion.

A post of particular interest.
I rode over to a fairly new Ducati dealer in Foxton where I met a bloke on the forecourt who'd just bought an MT10 last Friday.
He let me try it out for size and first impressions were very favourable indeed.
It has the bit of extra seat to foot peg room I'm looking for and while my first impressions of it on websites etc were that it was a little too angular and futuristic, it doesn't seem that way in the flesh.
I'm definitely booking a test ride after the one I have on a Multistrada.

Looks like you could do a lot for the looks by spending half an hour with an allen key removing 70% of the plastic and fitting a round headlight. There appears to be a normal motorcycle hiding under there.

Grabbing a cosmetic write off following an RHS lowside looks favourite. Then you have an excuse to bin the end-can and frankly enormous collector box too.

It depends on the colour believe it or not, I think he said the 'Night Flouro' was the easiest to get but still about a month-6 weeks wait.



Personally I like the looks, R1 crash protection fits and nobody is 100% sure yet if a 2015 R1 3/4 exhaust will fit, it looks like it should but dealers are saying no... At over £600 for the Akra de-cat pipe and more again for the can I can see why they would rather sell that than a sub £500 Arrow.

Also the subframe looks very MT-09, it shouldn't be long until someone tries a 09 tail tidy on the 10. Evotech already have a MT-10 on loan from a customer so they should have a range of goodies available soon.

Looks stunning in black I hate it when a new model of something comes out and the manufacturer slowly trickles them through to attain the "exclusivity" to keep the price up with no deals to be done.

There has to be some part of the bike behind the rear tyre so the numberplate gets hung way out in the breeze to satisfy that requirement.

I don't think it looks too bad on this bike to be honest, fits in with the styling. For me the first order of business would be protection with a radiator/oil cooler guard and some engine protectors, then get it a bit louder.

Interesting review. Thanks for posting.

I had a deposit on one of these, but decided to stump up the extra for another R1 instead. The MT-10 appears to be much less focused than I would have liked. I've also come to the conclusion that it's irredeemably ugly in almost every aspect.

However, it'll sell extremely well because of the price, the CP4 engine, and the R1 DNA. Strategically for Yamaha, it gives MT-09 owners an obvious option for progression. I'm sure it will be one of the bikes of 2016.

May be some cheap MT-09s available soon?

If a big powerful naked don't look all minimalist like bikes such as the Hornet, FZ6, or Street Triple, then I don't see what's to love about them.

I appreciate that a naked R1 would need quite some chassis to make any use of all that power, but a trellis or perimeter frame and minimal bodywork is the best look and the right way IMO.

If this MT10 looked like Steve Burns's GSX monster it would be a far better bike to me at least.
