Went to check my chain for the first time on my first bike and I'm not sure what to look for, to see if I need to do any maintenance on the chain, it's very sticky and when touching it leaves big black marks on my hands is this good or bad? thanks

It could be bad if you have no washing up liquid to clean (your hands not the chain ) Wink

No it may not be not fine they need maintaining !........Clean chain to inspect , (remove front sprocket cover & chainguard)cover tyre with cardboard where spraying , I spray with wd40 and wipe with rags & a small brush ( be careful not to trap figers in sprocket ) when all the crud is off check the sprocket teeth aren't hooked or too sharp or any missing , they should be flat on the top . check the tension & wheel alignment If all is well oil chain & a few other things will need checking if you have never bothered before , so read a manual.
