Sorta win?

https://www.number10.gov.uk/Page23026

Quote:

We received a petition asking:

“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to abandon plans to implement a nationwide average speed detection carera system to enforce a new National Speed limit..”

Details of Petition:

“The government proposes to implement a new generation of average speed detection cameras, to enforce a new lower National Speed limit, covering most of the country’s roads. We all know safe speed of travel varies with the conditions. Inappropriate speed kills – not speed itself – but appropriate speed and safe driving techniques needs to be learnt. How often do we see people on motorways hogging the middle and overtaking lanes or using fog lights all the time? This is because people are not educated about this and think it is acceptable. What happened to the public information films on these very subjects? Has the government investigated whether driver education would save more lives than enforcing speed limits with cameras? Not doing so and forging ahead with the proposal invites the obvious accusation of being motivated by reasons of revenue collection. Cameras should not be introduced and instead a policy of driver education be implemented.”

Read the Government’s response

There are no plans to introduce a nationwide speed detection camera system or to change the national speed limit.

Average speed cameras (or time over distance cameras) calm speed over long stretches of road and are therefore used at sites where a significant number of collisions are scattered along a length of road.

However, whether to use safety cameras - and if so, which sort of camera - are entirely decisions for local road safety partnerships who know their roads best.

The Government keeps all speed limits under constant review to ensure they remain appropriate but has no plans to change the national speed limit. Any proposal to change the national speed limit would have to be based on robust evidence of the impact on casualties, emissions and journey times. It would also need to consider issues of enforcement and public acceptability. Any changes would be subject to widespread consultation.

How is it not a win at all? The response clearly states that there are no plans whatsoever to change the speed limits nor to have national speed camera system. The response has clearly debunked the false reporting by the media.

A victory against media hysteria then.

Hardly that. More of a confirmation that media hysteria can manipulate the great unwashed into meaningless armchair activism.

Oh sure, they're all ready to make a stand - so long as it doesn't actually involve having to stand...

Strange input in this thread Bazza,

You say that those who mumble online are armchair activist,

Yet at the same time,

On a different thread, you say that those that go out and inconvenience the public whilst making a stand and getting the news papers to report their protest which spreads the news of the protest which gets more people to join their fight, and continue to protest until they win.

Are effectively cocks, for daring to inconvenience the general public. If that’s what it takes to win.

(“My words, not yours, to represent the general over all impression I get from your postings”)

Question, what would YOU do to get an unfair and illegal situation reversed?

Because I can’t make out from your posting what course of action you would follow, to fight something you wanted to stop or reversed.

Whilst you don't seem to hold back slagging people off for the methods that they use when making their stand.

My bold. This is because you're what we used to call a bit of a thicko. These days I expect you're termed as "challenged" or "special" in some way. That's progress, I suppose.

I'm quite happy for you and your chums to object to some local council doing something you don't like - what I'm less happy about is your idea that you represent anyone other than yourself whilst doing so; you don't represent British bikers, nor BCF, nor MAG, nor BMF, nor FEMA, not the motorcycling industry - just yourselves.

Just a limp collection of pseudo-lefty, London-centric freetards with a one-issue agenda and too much free time.

I agree that government should focus more on to educate drivers for safe driving than putting some cameras that will only cost much instead of spending it to something that is really important to people like health probably. Well it is a good thing that they change there mind.
