Getting a bit of clutch slip on my ZX6R, fine under normal conditions but when dumping the clutch to wheelie in 2nd gear it just slips rather than gripping and picking the front up like it should. Have had several wheelie gurus opinions and they've all said a standard 600 should be capable of wheelying in 2nd gear no problem, and that my clutch is just not up to the job.

So I'm after ideas for what I should do, I'm going to give the bike a service and use some high quality oil in case that helps, but Im also looking at fitting an uprated clutch. Only thing is I'm not sure what I'm looking for exactly, there's EBC clutch kits on ebay but I'm not sure if they're OEM replacements or uprated for more power. Do I want a set of clutch friction plates or will I need the entire basket assembly with new springs? Whatever I need, where's the best place to get them from and how much should I be looking to spend?

Never had an issue popping the front up in 2nd on my J model.

Have you gone to a 14t front sprocket? That helps alot.

Ive recently replaced the clutch to some plates from Wemoto, they have angled grooves between the plates. Altho im not sure what difference that makes, it certainly bites better!

You clould get away with stiffer springs aswell i guess, been as the clutch is 'one finger' light!

I've got standard front sprocket and a 43t rear sprocket, big gold thing. I think the standard is 40t so it's three teeth bigger. Thought when I bought it that I wouldn't need to go any smaller on the front, but if standard bikes are popping up fine and mine just slips even with the bigger sprocket on the back it's got to be the clutch.

Looking on Ebay there's only one that looks like a possibility, an EBC Kevlar Street Clutch kit.

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EBC-Kevlar-Street-Race-Clutch-Kit-ZX6R-ZX6RR-636-Z750-/350075390118?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item51821e88a6

It's listed as including heavy duty springs, so does that mean the whole lot is going to be heavier duty or will it just be standard?

I'm guessing even a new standard clutch would be better than what I've got anyway.

By the way, any vids of you wheelying the 6 in 2nd? Wink

Nope. Im not big into my wheelies so never really bothered getting vids. I just know when i do try to pop it up, i find it too scary in 1st Embarassed .

The bike has now been crashed and is in the process of being fightered, so will attempt to get a vid for you.

A new set of friction plates will make a difference, the stiffer springs would probably help it if you like riding on one wheel often.

The springs are about as important as the plates for reliable clutch action.

You can get slutch slip from tired springs, not just worn plates. My FJ was slipping badly, replaced the plate sand still got slip, chucked in new spring (FJ uses a diaphragm spring rather than small coils) and was fine from then on.

Well I've bought the clutch I've linked to now anyway. Spoke to the seller who uses them in race and drag bikes so it must be able to cope with the measly little wheelies I want to dish out!

Fairly sure my problem is just a knackered standard clutch, a new standard clutch would probably sort the problem but I'm going to go a bit overkill and fit this heavy duty race one just to be totally sure.

Can't wait!
