I've just seen a bike in the flesh that I have never considered due to the style, never heard of apart from the odd mention but first impressions were that of lust and a need to know more!

It was a Husqvarna SMR 510.

I looked at the KTM 690 and the baby hypomotard by Ducati and none really took my fancy for a second look, but this bad boy?!

I have more fun on the road on my KLX300 supermoto than my old Thundercat or SV650.

I'm sure that'd be around the same fun factor, comfy too!

There's a review of a Husqvarna bike in motorcycle sport and leisure this month (can't remember which one). It's seems they've been owned by BMW for the last couple of years and the build quality has taken a big leap forward. Was a bit dodgy before that by all accounts.

There was a Husky Dealers near Southend I popped in once I loved the look of these too although the valves need checking every 3-4k I believe.

Personally, I'd go for the TE610 as a starter supermoto, you can pick up a very clean version for not a lot of money.

I had the 410 version, I did less than 500 miles on it and it broke down three times. I sold it.

The 410 needed oil changes every few hundred miles and the oil was £50 for 4 litres. Valve clearances needed checking every 1000 km or so.

The 510 may be better but I doubt it.

Pyro is right. Get the 610; the 500's require more maintenance.

The 610s are apparently not as vibey as the ktm 640s etc.

If there was a 610 near me when I was looking, then I would of snapped it up. I settled on a 404 instead.

From what I've heard the 610 is definitely smoother than the 640, however the 690 is a bit smoother (it has a decent chunk of balancing metal).
The 610 does add around 30kg weight to the 510 and probably similar power, however longer service intervals (3000 miles) and more road usability. However it doesn't have the true-lunatic feel of the competition bikes. Light weight and high centre of gravity means the front comes up at a fair bit higher speeds.

Ive got to admit i have went from a ZX10R to the KTM 990sm i wanted a bit of fun with a more up right riding position and i found exactly what i wanted.

The power is much more useful instead of being double the speed limit before the bike felt like it was riding the bike as designed the supermoto lower end grunt imho is much better for a road bike.

My KTM 990 sm eats rear tyres but gives me more confidence on bends than my zx10r ever did, the lightweight flick able handling makes your sports bike feel too big and bulky for the road.

I was stuck between the 990sm and smt i did not want to go down to a 600 and wanted a bit more miles from the tank, your more than welcome if you want a shot the next time your up north.

looks a lot like my ccm..........
i never comsidered a sm before either but got this one cheap & its the most fun i've had on a 4 stroke.
600cc rotax lump,brembos,decent suspension , 17ich wheels & a remus can. absolutely mental.
only complaint is its a bit loud & its air cooled.
weird oil in the frame design as well.
pretty good up to around 90, then it vibrates a bit, but its not built for speed...........
& im only 5ft 9 + its not too tall.

I think I've finally twigged why I like it, it looks like a grown up version of Bens pit / tzr hybrid!
