The old Gamma RG125 would be about the same as an NS etc, 85-90mph, and it has about 23bhp@9500. The Newer RG125F that looks like an RGV250 has more power 31bhp@11200rpm claimed and has a 30mm carb. Its supposed to be fast 100-105mph, but not very reliable being a powervalved suzuki 2 stroke. Some say its the best looking japanese 125, but i reckon that the TZR125R was better looking even though its tiny.

tell me a bike that use's a 2 stroke power valve thats ment to be reliable though.
The only reason i didnt go for one was because the only ones i could find where about 1300 upwards...

Hi

Think the original RG125 was pretty quick (they managed a true 80mph restricted), but VERY light. Think they were mainly restricted in the exhaust (easily removed washer) and by leaving the power valve chamber open perminantly (don't think that makes that much difference).

All the best

Keith

I rode an old one when i first got the NSR.
Not like the newer style and was alot lighter than my bike, also a kick start.
brake disc's where small but adaquate, i'd prefere to have the newer style though.

Id personally have the older RG, as though it dont look like much, as keith says its really light, i think about 95kg ish? The motor is easy to de-restrict, with a new Nikon, Micron, or Giannelli pipe and rejet. The newer RG125F has a less reliable more highly tuned motor, that as far as i know uses the RGV250 type cylinder, and powervalve. Its fast enough, but probably just as unreliable as the 250. It is possible to have a reliable 2 stroke motor with a PV system. The Kawasaki KMX is a pretty reliable unit, and also the Yamaha TZR/DTR motors with YPVS are pretty reliable. Both of these designs use rotating drum type power valves, instead of the Guillotine type valves of the suzuki's and other bikes like Cagiva's and Aprilia's. This means that the valve can never come into contact with the piston, causing a major catastrophy as sometimes happens on some motors. Id say overall that yamaha probably make the best most reliable 2 stroke motors out of all the jap bikes, and alothough kawasaki made some reliable motors like the KH/KE, KMX, AR, they also made the KR1S which was never very reliable, but this was mainly due to Piston and ring problems, and very poor component matching, and varying manufacturers tolerances. Id personally never buy a high performance 2 stroke suzuki, with the exception of the RG500 which was pretty reliable as std.

Some fairly nice facts you stated, but having said that honda also use the same "barrel" type PV as you stated.
And Keith would know about the cagiva gillotine PV Wink

In my personal opinion if you wantred reliability you wouldnt even look at a 2 stroke motor point. you just go for a bigger 4 stroke comparison.

but wheres the fun in that Wink

Hi

The nicest power valve was that used by Gilera. This is a barrel type, similar to the Yamaha system but at low revs it also uncovered a chamber which increased the exhaust port volume which should increase low down power (the way the old Honda ATAC system worked was just by opening the chamber at low revs).

The Cagiva system works well if adjusted properly, but get the adjustment wrong and the valve touches the piston. Without faulty components the valve cannon touch the piston the the Rotax / Aprilia power valve.

The NSR uses a shaft which rotates to lift a couple of flaps.

All the best.

Keith
