Tis an awesome picture that's for sure.
Theres an ace picture of a southern right whale, but I don't have it with me in Thailand. But its a diver standing on the bottom about 10 feet from a SRW, also on the bottom.
As for whale encounters, most of them are fairly tedious. Although I have been towed by a whale once. With the boat impact point being a choice of sea lion rock sorrounded by great white sharks, or a cage diving boat sorrounded by great white sharks... Luckily we got the line free 
Oh, and and I've seen a calf snorkelling. Mummy dived quicker. For big fuckers they disappear quickly if they want to.

Incredible picture 
I have a mate that is a commercial diver (based out of Perth Oz) .. who used to dive all over the world.
He was once doing some incredibly boring manual task , at some silly depths, where you live in a chamber for days/weeks??.. .... Anyway he had a whale come right up to him, as he worked on some pipe, and eyeball him for ages.
He said he just stopped what he was doing and looked in awe into the things eye .... apparently he had a proper 'spiritual' moment.
I love whales ... looking at them makes me happy.
Bonny, If you find that image in better resolution / no title etc... can you email me it please.
