Depends how it's restricted. You need to find that out.

moast if not all mopeds are restricted in any of the following ways sometimes all of them:

'washer' in the variator

cone restriction in the exhaust

airbox restriction

rev limited CDI

all of them are easy to correct barring the exhaust one where your better off buying a aftermarket as the original will require cutting and wellding

Generally speaking, trying to derestrict peds isn't a good idea. It's better to have a perfect running scoot that does 30-ish than one that doesn't run at all. I speak from painful past experience Shocked Laughing

Going slowly is frustrating, but not going is much much worse. Plenty of time to go fast on bigger bikes at a later stage.

It's probably not possible without going to great lengths. For example, a lot of peds have restricted but sealed exhausts. No real way of removing the restriction. Rev limiters can be bypassed sometimes, but they vary.

You would probably find more useful advice on a specialist scooter forum.

off topic i know sorry, but I found when i destricted my girlfriends Piaggio Zip 50 4T it did better in speed and the fuel consumption went down which in turn increased the MPG by another 20MPG!

Anyway on topic, easiest is to remove the washer in the front variator. You will need an impact wrench to do this job properly, or a flywheel/variator locker to undo the drive nut.

Next is the exhaust, get a performance one far better suited.

Next is worth reading this

There's photos of AY50s with funky pipes on Bikepics, so clearly tuning goodies are available for them.

There used to be a de-restriction guide on the Taffspeed website, that told you exactly how each make of 50cc engines in scooters were restricted.

AFAIK the Katana has two main restrictions.

1, The std Variator has a too small a range of gearing, and i don't think in this case it's limited by a spacer etc, it's just the pulley is too small to give high enough gearing for decent top end speed.
The Polini one's seem to be a very good replacement with a higher maximum ratio.

2, The exhaust has the usual restrictions, and the best way round this is a cheap but decently made and good quality expansion chamber. Best to get a stainless steel or chrome pipe thats easier to keep clean and rust free.

Don't fit a race pipe without sorting out the gearing first, as apparently the katana has no ECU/ rev limiter restrictions, and will overrev to 12000rpm if the gearing is not raised to take advantage of the extra power from an unrestricted exhaust.

First stage mate is change your exhaust , For example buy a leo vince tt or zx and you will gain 10-12mph easy.

Then if this is'ant enough you can change your variator to a race one or buy bigger cylinder kits and carbs Very Happy
