Do you pay money for "E" roads ?

Only 8 days (well 7 and a half if you want to be fussy) until I go away to Europe.

Still not finalised a rough route to take yet. However when doing some homework for the trip, I keep coming across E-roads, which I can only imagine are mini-motorways similar to our dual-carridgeways.... Is this correct ?

And if so, do you pay to use these ?

Just now I am looking at google maps and it says this:

"16. Turn right at Bystrická cesta 2.6 km
17. Continue onto Route 59/E77
Continue to follow E77
Partial toll road 66.0 km 18. Take exit Kováčová toward Košice/Šahy
Toll road 350 m
19. Merge onto Route 66/E77 "

These roads are not motorways as the motorways in this area are marked with a letter "M" or a letter "D".

E roads are just principle European Routes, I think the idea is mainly to make navigating easier across borders - plus they'll get maintenance funding from EU.
Some may have tolled sections but not all by any means.

Yep, ignore the E numbers as they just piggyback the actual road numbers and classifications. If you follow E numbers you'll soon get lost anyway as signage isn't consistent. Each country has a map of it's motorway network and which ones are toll free or not. The AA Europe atlas has a useful map at the front showing the motorway network in blue for free and red for tolled.

Put the same route into https://www.viamichelin.com/

And then you can see if it is marked as a toll road and what the local designation will be

I am sure that the E road idea is just to make navigation that bit more complicated, you have a choice of 2 road identifications, the countries one or the European one ( E road ) Its gets complicated when the country road changes or at a junction but the E number stays the same.
