PostPosted: 18:35 - 09 Mar 2007    Post subject: My Aprilia RS50 Project... Reply with quote

Hi guys, I recently picked up a cheap Aprilia RS50 from a DVLA impound yard, initially I had bought it for spares for my other Aprilia RS50 but as a few of you know that was sadly stolen from me. I then went on to get an Aprilia RS125 which I am now using on the road but have 6 months free insurance on any Aprilia RS50 from the original contract I had with my insurance company as my stolen Aprilia RS50 was a third party only scheme and therefore once I told them, they told me they'd put my insurance on hold for if I get another bike. Anyway I've always loved Aprilia RS50s and so I thought I'd bring this one back from the dead and use it for a bit of fun when I'm not on my Aprilia RS125. Anyway at the moment this bike is a complete mess and it seems has clearly been treated poorly cosmetically, having said that the engine sounds very good and it only has 5000 miles on the clock...

Here are some photos of what it looked like at the beginning of the restoration project:

The Front:

Close-Up Of All The Scratches On The Front:

The Petrol Tank:

The Back:

As you can see from the above pictures I have a lot of work to do... Laughing it also seems to have white paint poured on it (possibly the product of vandalism while it was in the yard?). I intend to clean the whole bike up and do a full body respray and add original decals from the 2005 Model Aprilia RS50, by the end I hope it will look like this:

https://www.jacaremoto.com.br/motos/fotos/aprilia_rs125_1.jpg

Anyway guys I hope you enjoy the thread, wish me luck and please come and look back at this thread as I'll constantly update it... Very Happy

Nothing that I can see at the moment is wrong with the engine, although the brake lever is bent...

https://www.mmchosting.co.uk/mmcupload/12011/1173482554.jpg

All of the damage seems cosmetic to me at the moment, (For example it has a cracked windscreen, no right hand side mirror and the fairings have not only been extremely scratched but at the moment are also coevered in what seems to be a white layer of paint) hence me attempting to bring it upto it's previous glory... Very Happy

An update of what I've been doing...

The last you'll see of the bike in this condition:

https://www.mmchosting.co.uk/mmcupload/12011/1173638395.jpg

Since the above pictures were taken I had removed the fairings and have sanded them down, I started with the right hand side...

After...

I then went on to the left hand side...

After:

I then also went to put on the first layer of primer onto the right hand-side fairing...

Thanks for looking, I'll update again soon... Very Happy

nice one, I'm no RS fan, but nice to see someone put so much time, effort and commitment into a 'dead' bike, really do hope it goes well for you and you loads of fun Cool

your sanding doesnt look very smooth there.

you want to make the layers as blended as possible. there seems to be alot of hard edges there.

The yard is in Tottenham in London, the person who owns the place has some kind of deal with the council to take in bikes that have been found on the road without tax etc, some of the bikes are then reclaimed by the owner whilst most of them aren't reclaimed, you can't just buy the bikes, there is a bloke who has a yard right next to the impound who has 'exclusive' rights to the bikes, but he then sells them on, most of the bikes he sells are for parts only and therefore cannot go back onto the road but he does on rare occasions get a few bikes which are able to get back onto the road (there was a lovely Honda NSR 125 there the other day with some pretty rough cosmetic damage but the bloke said the engine ran pretty well, he wanted 250 pounds for it but it couldn't be put back on the road, so I let it go).

As a reply to Palmer, the sanding down is a lot smoother than it looks, trust me I know what I'm doing and am under supervision of my father who's been in this business for just over 20 years now.

I will post some more pictures soon. Thanks for looking!

A little update, I was slightly wrong about the engine being perfectly fine, it turns over and theres definitely compression but I'm having a problem getting the spark plug to spark and there seems to be petrol coming out of the head, shouldn't be too much of a problem to fix though. I also found a bargain on eBay so now I have a 21mm sports carburettor and having looked under the seat it seems the previous owners been playing with the wires to fit neons, I've been trying to sort this out so it might take a little while to post anymore cosmetic pictures. I also have an Endy Double Ended Sports Exhaust System which I was originally going to fit on my first Aprilia RS50 but thankfully I never got around to fitting it otherwise that would have been stolen with my first bike, heres a few pictures of the exhaust system to keep you guys entertained, I hope you like it...

And people wonder why the RS is associated with chavs Laughing

Looking 100% better already, but bear in mind that it'll take more than a nice top coat to get the beats back on the road.

Nice little idea for a project, big up to ya Thumbs Up

I always think plastics look best in primer.

Maybe that's just my spraying skills for you...

Nice one Thumbs Up

The bike should look A1 if the bodywork is as good in the flesh as is in the pictures.
