I've just had yet another argument with this feckin' stupid dad of mine who firmly believes that he can't see the point of any bike bigger than 50cc and thinks that a 50cc is all you need to get around! my feckin' arse it will! If it was down to him all bikes would be banned and the speed limit would be 20 mph. He just doesn't understand bikes, he won't listen, i'm wasting my bloody breath on him and driving myself nuts in the process! Does anyone else have parents like this, and if os how do u deal with 'em? He wants to wrap me in bloody cotton wool for christ's sake!!!!

well try not to argue, just agree.
but dont agree in a sarcastic way, otherwise that winds them up even more.

see it from their view and give a different reason such as, yeah but a 125 is petty adaquate. i mean i have enough potential power to get out of danger, and the engineering is far better.

And because its more power i wont have to raz it round all the time.

hmmmmmmm... my mum threatened to chuck me out of the house when i wanted a bike, my dad (doesnt live with us) said he wouldnt let me get anything other than a 50cc and even offered to help me buy one (thats rare considering he wont give me foooook all!) so..

i goes buys a bandit at 17, sells it and buys a ZXR and rides that till im 18 which ive still got now i want a 600 of some sort. My mum didnt throw me out, quite the oposite really, she even came on a rideout with us (pillion) and goes down the bike pub every now and then! She's learnt that I am HAVING a bike, she knows im not a twat on a bike (altho she wont watch the videos we been making lately lol) so she's learnt to live with it...

advice to you is to buy the bike and let the parents learn to live with it! cos they will do mate, trust me. (unless they psycho's and they actuallt do throw you out Laughing)

Hey mate, i can understand your point about gettin hassle from your parents over wanting a bike. I was kinda in the same position at 18, as my mum really dont like bikes, and i would have had hell, if id gone out then and got a bike. I nearly did, not really to piss her off, but cos getting to college on the bus was a pain in the arse. My plan was to get me dad back on a bike, which worked, and after that i knew that my mum would have no chance of trying to stop me getting a bike. I waited til 21 tho, as i had a brief boy racer phase with cars, and then i rode a bike on holiday with me mates in greece, and decided that id get me license when i got back. Point is that i never thought me mum would ever be happy for me to have a bike at one stage, but given time she came round, and now it dont bother her, though she still dont really like bikes. But ultimately if you want to get a bike now then its gotta be up to you, despite any pressure from your parents, at the end of the day its your choice, its just that sumtimes they think they are doing the right thing by trying to discourage you from doing what you really want to do. I reckon my mum would have had to face it that if i wanted a bike at 18, i would have had one, an she might have been not happy about it, but she would have had to eventually accept it as it would be my choice. Im just saying listen to your folks, and recognise that often if they trying to stop you doin something like getting a bike it probably just they worry and care for your safety, so you have to remember that, but at the same time if you are determined to have a bike, anything your parents might say isnt going to stop you, if its what you want to do.

There's nothing my family can do short of throwing me out that's going to stop me having a bike, and I already know that. Admittedly they're a lot less uppity about it than they were when i first mentioned the idea, and hopefully they'll be even less so as time goes on. I think that the best way to deal with it is probably to (like u said) either ignore their comments, or just not say anything back :S

/me looks at karma-o-meter

BTW, if any of you lot are having trouble with your parents in regards to bikes, NEVER EVER EVER MENTION THAT YOU OR A FRIEND WAS IN AN ACCIDENT ALSO DON'T SAY THAT YOU'VE SEEN ONE.
Luckily my mum is relatively cool about me having a bike, she does worry, but she understands that as long as I can ride, I will. My dad took longer to come round to the idea, he always had the moto "A bike is the quickest way to hospital". Rolling Eyes

Luckily I didn't have any problem with my parents over getting a bike. Even though my mum was (and still is really) dead against me having one she knew that i was old enough to make the decision on my own and there was nothig she could do to change my mind.

As for the 50cc is enough to get around on argument, what size engine is in his car? You could argue that a 1L is more than enough to get around on....

That karma meter is a sort of reflection on how well u fit into the forum (i.e. how much the computer and everyone likes u) It can be inaccurate at times i guess, as Luke seems to be pretty popular but has got himself banned before i think, but either way mine's started going down so i've stopped acting like an idiot - I've heeded my warning lol.

The karma thing works on punctuation, spelling and so on. It's nothing personal any more (was more fun when it was though!).

So use the spellchecker, make posts of reasonable length and so on, and your karma should rise or at least not drop.

my stepdad refuses to talk to me about bikes or anywhere i've been on a bike which is understandable as he lost his best friend to a motorbike. my mum constantly points out that she thinks the zxr is too big a bike for me, which it probably is, but at least i'm aware of that. i've always been honest with my parents, they know i do a lot of things that aren't good for me, but i think they're finally beginning to understand that i'm not really that bothered about anything they have to say to me anymore, they've pushed me into doing things i didnt want to before, so it's only fair that i get to make some mistakes for myself

I am 20 so my parents knew I was old enough and would get one regardless if I wanted one, but parents do worry about their kids (understandable, no parent wants to outlive their child). But the best way I found to lessen their fears was to involve them in what I wanted to do.
My step dad has been riding bikes for years and has a Hornet 500 so my mum, though worried was ok with it. But my father who also wanted a bike when he was younger but was stopped by his folks when a family friend had a very bad accident on a bike and didn't make it through, was very concerned. So I peaked his interest in the idea again and he did his CBT! He now has a 125 himself so can not really complain to me about having a bike, we are even discussing which first 'big bike' we want!
So I suggest something similar, ask them to do a CBT themselves or something. Then not only will they find that if you are sensible then you should be fine, but it would also make them better drivers as they will be more aware of bikes on the road.

Ah i didn't know the karma meter had changed. My parents have differences on bikes, it's weird. My mum was hit by a bike when she was little, but my grandad used to have bikes so she should at least be used to them. When my dad was younger he want to work on the back of a triumph (like most people do aroun 1970) lol.
I guess they just worry about me, and i worry about me too, but not to the point of being paranoid. I keep asking my dad to get himself on a CBT but he seems to think he knows better. Maybe he wouldn't like to be found out to be less safe than me lol.

IMO a 50cc is more dangerous than a 125cc, i mean can you keep up with the traffic on a 60mph road? or do you have cars skimming past you because your only doing 30?
My dad didn't want me to have a bike (even though he's got two ) "its not you son, its the other drivers" Confused
And, "if you get a bike then you cant live here" changed to "if you get a bike, the bike cant live here" when my little sis moved out, and now i've got a bike he's ok about it, he helps fix it when things go wrong and we've even been for a ride together!

i've still goto keep it in my girlfriends garage tho!
