Before I put my bike away for December, it used to start first time, every time. Now, after just one month, it is refusing. Thought I would try and push-start it in 1st and/or 2nd gear but it will not move at all, only in neutral. However, when engaged in gear and the starter is pressed, it moves forward at about one MPH, but does not start. Any ideas?

Embarrasingly, how can I tell? It does sound like it wants to start, but just can't quite get there. Just to give an you an idea, this is what it sort of sounds like. Then, every now and again, it will cough like it is about to start (sorry for the crap video, it was the quickest I could find).

Yeah Rusty, all the way in. It does move, but it requires an immense amount of effort. I remember it used to just as if it was in neutral.

It could be that the clutch plates are sticking ? Neutral

But for starting you could try spraying easy start or similar in carbs .

I have just been to Halfords and bought a battery charger. I will leave that on over night and reconnect it tomorrow and see how that goes as well as see if it is sparking. If these don't work, I will look at getting some Easy Start.

My bandit has the exact same problem in the cold. She'll whirr and you'll get a few chugs from the engine but not enough to spurr it into life. If you know your bike, check to see if the neutral light is as bright as it normally is. From what your saying though, id say there's a fair chance a full charge will fix it

dragstaar, everything appears exactly as it did before. It even used to start fine when we had the -5°C before the snow. All the lights and instrument bulbs look as bright as they did.

I wouldn't have thought that a battery would completely lose its charge after only three weeks.

Hi Adam it may be the same as my lads bandit
have a look if the wire from the right bar is behind a clip on the side of the steering head and a cable clip,
if so take it out and have a look a the back of the head light there is a black plug on the end of that lead,
check the orange/white and the orange/black wires thay are the kill swith wires ,
thay may have broke by that cable tidy on the steering head with turning the bars over the years ,
if it is that solder it back together and tape up again.

Sorted - just needed a good charge. Connected the battery this morning and she fired into life, much to the dismay of the neighbours!

Voila! thats the thing, Turning over the engine takes such a tremendous amount of power from the battery, that three weeks without running in the cold may be enough to drain it to the point where it doesn't have enough umph to turn her over.
