Sounds like it. It's not an expensive job on a CG, probably about £15 for the rings, about the same again for a head gasket, just need to find out of the cylinder is okay or not.

Sounds like the bike has been run without oil for too long., you will probably need a rebore, oversize piston and rings plus a new camshaft as the hardened face has probably worn off which would cause the tappets to rattle. The pushrods and followers will probably be badly worn as well, there is little point in replacing one worn/faulty component without replacing them all. You would need to work out if the bike is worth that ammount of work plus you dont know what other damage/wear has been caused to the main bearing and crankshaft.

Rob, it sounds like your oil control ring is broken and possibly your two compression rings as well. Dont ride the bike at all until the rings at least have been replaced as you will cause much more expensive damage and you will risk as seizure. Please dont even consider using the bike as you could end up causing yourself serious injury.

It will last hundreds, maybe even thousands of miles yet, but the amount of smoking coming out and the oil drank will only ever get worse.

Rob, it is honestly too dangerous as if the bike burns its oil the crank could seize or you could have a piston seizure due to the already damaged piston, bore and broken rings, it aint worth it, been there done that and still have the scars to prove it.

Of corse it COULD just be the valve stem seals have fallen off....
Does it smoke on acceleration, over run, or all the time?

Rob, check the camshaft as if its worn out then the rest of the engine is hardly worth the hassle of fixing and the cost would be very high.

not smoking now that he unsiezed the the ring but needs a fare few new parts.

Well now it's apart you're hardly likely to be back on it tomorrow, unless you already have a new piston / rings and a gasket to rebuild it properly?

Hope it's fixed soon though Thumbs Up

I agree. It's about £1.69 currently for a litre of oil (20w50) from Morrisons which my CG is absolutely loving right now Laughing

Wanna tell him were to find such a part in the top end of a CG engine then? Laughing

The CG's are pushrod and rocker system, there is no camshaft. as has been said, keep an eye on the oil, Im guessing your going to put a new piston and rings in. I suggest taking the valves out, lapping them back in and fitting new stem seals whilst the top end is apart as it will no doubt make it run better and loose less/no oil.

Cheers
John
