recently acquired a free pc, so decided to use it as server/media centre. it is sat in the living room hooked up to a 42" full HD TV through a VGA cable. specs are below.
is it worth upgrading the pc to support HD video playback or buying a new pc. thinking i could drop a cheapy core 2 duo or something similar in and a cheap graphics card that supports HDMI out. maybe a bit of extra DDR ram. think i should be able to do this for under 100 notes.
what do you people think?

Do yoy get a socket 775 dual core? Can the motherboard support dual core. The money spent buying one and a HD graphics card you could buy a cheap combi that supports hd and rebuild. Sorry but i think you are flogging a dead horse.

what kind of graphics card can i use in this?
no agp or pci-e
beginning to think this is a lost cause if i can't sort out a graphics card.
another point to add is that i will not be buying new stuff. all of it will be bought 2nd hand either ebay or classifieds etc

Stick another Gig o RAM in it and a silent fan. If it is only to be used to watch your downloaded films and wired into the 5.1 for your MP3s this this is good enough. Why bother with the HD? Your computer is better speck then the one i use as a media centre.

because SD on a 42" TV looks rubbish in comparison. all of my movies are in HD on the hard drive anyway.
i don't have mp3 music. mp3 sucks. all of music is lossless quality.
as you can tell i am a quality freak. to me, no point in buying good equipment without a good source. don't know if this is because of my job but it is the way i am.

Yes i am a tight ass as well. What is that an old server? I cant see you getting a quality graphics card for that. Cant you get a NAS drive with HD socket? Not to sure but you would get the enclosure without a HDD in it quite cheap.

Just had a thought. How about a HD TV card, do these not have output extensions?

no way it will take a dual core. thats running on ddr133 .. thats a OLD motherboard. and a PCI NOT PCI-e GPU

another 1gb ram ... means £ 20-30 if not more for ddr1
as for 42" hd .... from that NO CHANCE

Be better of turning it into a file server or something.
